Hello,

I'm new to this forum, but have been skulking around other watch forums for years.

This is a watch you won't see much of:

This is the Astrodea, an astronomical, quartzwatch made by Citizen. Every year, Citizen introduces a new theme for the watches, which are designed by a Japanese astronomer. 500 of the blue dial version, are released yearly. 200 of the yellow version are released per year, but for distribution in Japan only.

This particular watch is a planisphere watch, depicting the Northern Hemisphere from latitude 35 degrees N (Tokyo). The dial rotates independantly in sidereal rate, which is about 24 hours. The chapter ring is user set to the appropriate time and date. From that setting, the dial will show the positions of the constellations at any time. The watch comes boxed with a huge user manual, which unfortunately, is entirely in Japanese, and a 10x loupe. Click here and look at the top of the pageto see an animation of what this watch does: http://www.astrodea.jp/

The last pic below, shows you the constellation Orion, through the loupe.

I got a very good deal with mine from the EBay a few years ago directly from Tokyo; if you can find one, expect to pay ~$450-600.

Thanks to all for your welcome.

Speaking of astronomy oriented watches, Orion currently offers a Planisphere watch for $44.99. Not as pretty as the Citizen but a lot more available. Good for the astronomer who has everything.

Also Casio did a Halleys comet tracking watch with an LCD planetary orbits graphic window in the period before Halleys comets last perihelion passage, about 1989. I have one, still working. As I am not a photographer and everyone loves photos below is a link to a web page with a photo of the Casio. It was called the Casio CGW-50 Cosmo Phase for those looking for one on ebay.

Astronut, are you an astronomer?

I'm an amature astronomer. before moving to Parkersburg, WV, I lived in Cincinnati, OH. I was the Instrument Chairman of the Cincinnati Astronomical Society and had the privilege of working with their telescopes.

Yes, amateur too. I sent you a PM in answer to yours. I just ordered the Orion planisphere watch. Talking of the Cincinatti scope, I used the 8" Clark and 20" Brashear/Warner & Swaseyrefractors at Chabot Observatory in Oakland which is where the Eastbay Astronomical Society met.

i love the look of these watches, and much more reasonably priced than other constellation or planetarium watches

Very cool I have never seen anything like it. I might have to try and locate one.

Lovely, have seen before, now I want one

I've see. Something similar in a list of the most expensive and complex movements.

Welcome and thanks for sharing. Very cool, but I'm lacking the background in astrophysics needed to read it. :)
