LOUIS MOINET - Tempograph Tempograph is the first and only 10-second retrograde complication activated by a visible cam mechanism.
Press release

LOUIS MOINET launches TEMPOGRAPH, a world first thanks to all-new technology.

TEMPOGRAPH original technology is absolutely unique in its kind. It consists in the first and only 10-second retrograde complication activated by a visible cam mechanism. This invention has been patented (patent pending), since TEMPOGRAPH can be considered as one of the most creative watches on today’s market.

The exclusive TEMPOGRAPH movement is a self-winding mechanism with a balance beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. This complication movement is made up of 125 parts © Louis Moinet

The distinctive feature of TEMPOGRAPH is its retrograde seconds mechanism, which is constantly on the move. The watch is a non-stop visual delight, enlivened by the regular ballet of a hand that marks off the time in ten-second segments alternating with an instant retrograding motion.

At 9 o'clock, the cam mechanism is truly spectacular and has been left visible so as to enable the wearer to admire it in action. The cam is composed of six teeth and performs one rotation per minute. It releases a titanium lever adjusted to the 100th of a gram.

TEMPOGRAPH – "the making of"

From the idea through to the finished result, this watch called for three full years of gestation as befits the creation of a legendary watch. An accomplishment that deserves to be accompanied by echoes from the artisans who contributed to creating this miniature marvel, including a visit to Exidel in Moutier, the technical partner with which Louis Moinet developed the TEMPOGRAPH.

Jean-Claude Sozzani, watchmaker and head of the technical department
« The TEMPOGRAPH movement is a complex Haute Horlogerie movement. Never before had a retrograde mechanism been fully revealed. In our case, it is particularly spectacular, since it takes the form of a cam that releases a titanium and white gold lever every 10 seconds. The need to perfectly define its centre of gravity makes this part particularly complex to produce »

Bernard Goudron, case-maker

« In all my 20 years in this profession, I had never created such a complex case. First of all, we had to individually make all fifty parts composing it, before facing the challenge of adjusting them all together. Just imagine that we had to achieve a hair’s breadth tolerance of five hundredth of a millimetre! »

Jean-Marie Schaller, Louis Moinet CEO

« TEMPOGRAPH is a truly incomparable watch that can be considered as new genre in the field of horological complications. The fact that the cam and the retrograde hand are in constant motion lends it an unexpected and visually extraordinary appeal»

The seconds lever is made from titanium and white gold. The lever assembly comprises 15 meticulously assembled parts tested to within thousandths of a millimetre to ensure perfectly smooth operation.

The TEMPOGRAPH is essentially hand-crafted. Milling and micromechanical operations are performed on this traditional jig-boring machine© Louis Moinet

Hand-burnishing the pivots is an extremely delicate operation carried out using a burnisher and designed to ensure a perfect surface finish and appropriate tolerance of the part being crafted.

The manual assembly of each TEMPOGRAPH is a highly demanding task calling for a considerable amount of time and patience

Simply stunning! Thanks for posting this, James.

I'm off to try and find a video of the movement in action! I imagine that it's mesmerizing!

I'm actually surprised to see this in such a large case size for the watch design. Granted there is a lot of bezel territory, but 47mm is larger for a non-sports watch.

Here's another article with personal (non-stock) pics . . .

are you telling time (the thing the watch is actually made to do which hopefully we dont forget, lol) on the tiny sub dial at the 12 position below the name? seems like a real waste of real estate. i wonder if actually telling time is not the main function of this ..... watch.
