What's the purpose of that pneumatic crane of sorts?
There are four in a row, on the edge of a square that also houses a Pathé movie theatre. They are giant spotlights (the lights turn on after dark) that can be operated by the public. The control panel is in the middle. It’s a moving art project from the late 90s. And indeed, made to look like cranes. Most younger people nowadays don’t know the purpose or the fact you can operate them yourself.

Oh neat, was actually going to say it looked like a piece of art Frans ! :D
Kind of was thinking they were something special because of just the
unique futuristic look, and ultra cool crimson color. (y) Plus they
don't look dinged up, or worn in any way like a crane might. It's really
something to see, and again that's from just seeing a picture. ..Must
be amazing in person, and especially to operate them !

Ridiculously cool Frans !!! ..THX !

Man, that is incredible Frans, and has such a majestic way about it. 😯
How long has that been there? ..You can tell that it's not only a very
special building, but that it's older than at least some of the buildings
around the area. 😎 Just love when past meets present like that, and
the two worlds live side, by side. On the one hand, you appreciate the
shiny new buildings, but on the other you have these sensational old
buildings that are much more than just buildings right?! 😉

Amazing Frans ! ..Wow, thanks again !!!

Yowza, it's just as impressive as had thought, and maybe even more
if that's possible Frans ! (y) (y) It's not only been around a very long
time, but has such a spectacular history. Honestly just love the look,
and style. Must be a joy enjoying this vintage skyscraper every day. 🙂
Really appreciate the look, along with link, and info sir !!!

Again, a great restoration project by the former owners of the building. (A huge construction company). The roof you see now is the roof as it was when the building was finished but somewhere in the last century it was replaced by a hideous glass structure resembling a roof and welded together from bars of railroad track. The former ownners took it upon themselves to right that wrong and did a full outside restoration as well, a gift to Rotterdam.

That is some gift Frans, and would have actually never known it
was restored in any way if you hadn't told me. 😯🙂 What's neat
too is how the second time it was restored, they actually did such
a terrific job ! Totally bringing it back to it's former glory, and who
knows, maybe even better right?! (y) ..It's extraordinary Frans,
and extraordinary to see. Thanks so much !!!

The row of houses you see to the left of the building was also beautifully restored (yes, we do a lot of restoration over here :)) as the whole block had miraculously escaped the bombing of WWII.

I actually noticed those Frans ! 😮 Yowza, very very cool to hear ! 😎
Was thinking the people just really kept them in good shape. With
maintaining everything, and painting them often. But hearing that
they were restored is even more impressive. Love how it shows
how everyone appreciates them so much, and how lucky they
were not to be destroyed in the bombings like that. Wonderful sir !!!

A cool shot of those "Cube Houses" from awhile back:

Eric, man oh man, is that something?! 😀 Or what?!😵

I swear the first thing that came to mind was a kaleidoscope honestly !
It's unbelievable seeing the angles, as well as mix of design elements
everywhere. 👀 There's this genuine futuristic theme happening, but
it's somehow super practical, and timeless too. You can see there are
all of these different colors, along with materials. Then the cool look
skyward through the shapes is epic !

THX so much Eric !!! 🙂

The same houses from a different angle. I'm sorry Tom but in fact they are super impractical :) , because of the slanted walls you lose a lot of space and hanging curtains or blinds is a challenge. Some of the first owners got sick because of those slanted walls (dizzy) and had to move within a year. Piet Blom is the architect and as I mentioned years ago, it is nicknamed 'The Blaak Forrest' (after the street).

😄 Oh man, was thinking they actually saved space Frans.😊
Yowza, and people actually got sick?! 😵 That is crazy, and a
real shame. But still think that they at least look really neat sir.
It's kind of like the artist wanted people to live in modern art,
or some kind of painting. So from the street, or from here it
looks phenomenal?! But to live in it isn't fun I guess.

Thanks for the terrific info, and everything Frans !!!

Still is really cool imho. 🙂

This is less than 200 meters from my house, the Noordsingel (North Canal). It is part of a water project throughout Rotterdam that was started in 1841 and not to make the city more beautiful but to provide fresh water as many homes didn't have any form of plumbing and people had to use buckets to get water. Now it has become a source of joy and as a kid I used to go fishing there:

That is something Frans, and just the fact that this is so close to
you has to be wonderful really ! 🤯😎 You can probably see it
any time you like from a window, or just hear the water, or the
fountains within it. 😀 Not to mention those ducks, or cool birds,
and just wildlife around sir.

What's amazing, is how we are just seeing it as a majestic place,
but it evidently had it's ingenious origins too. Pretty extraordinary !!!
Honestly, could stare at that all day sir ! Hey, wait a minute, now
I can thanks to you Frans ! 😃Thanks so so much !!!

You aren’t kidding Frans ! (y) (y) Nice enough to be a postcard !!! 😀
Or even another unforgettable painting sir. I mean you have the extra
stunning scenery near, and far. But then also love the mix of both old,
and new once again ! You see it with the surrounding buildings, and
structures one second, and then even in the boats themselves the
next. 😎 Hey, and how about the sky sir?! Pretty spectacular really!

Hope you don’t mind if I check this out for a little while longer Frans ! 🙂

THX very very much for sharing !!!
