So... Let me see if I'm looking at this right... It's a tourbillon with an open case back, but it looks like that tourbillon mechanism isn't connected to anything at all. It also looks like the main movement is pretty small, or its parts are configured differently to accommodate that big hole in the bottom. Mysterious is definitely a good description. Baffling would be another.

Sapphire gears? There are clocks that work that way too, completely transparent:



I dug around a bit and these are Cartier as well.

Sapphire gears sounds plausible, but I would expect one could still see the edges of each gear. In addition, what about the hubs and axles of each gear?

Yes, a similar principle. Although I must admit that I still have to figure out how Cartier connects the tourbillion to the rest of the movement.
