Totally ripped the idea for this thread from another site, but thought it was a cool topic.

Other than "looks cool" or "liked the movement", etc., is there a watch or watches in your collection that you bought for special reasons? Maybe to commemorate a date or event, a job promotion or maybe you'd seen one in a movie or whatever.

Post a pic, and a brief description of the story behind the purchase.

I'll start to provide the example.

Oris Titan Chrono

As a certified scuba diver, I'll probably always be partial to dive watches. Had previously owned several decent watches, and wanted to take the next step up to a nicer piece. Found Oris, liked what I saw in their divers, their connection to motorsports and the fact they are somewhat rare. Saw one in person at an AD, drove home and almost straight back to the store to buy it.

not to highjack your thread.......ive bought many watches for many different reasons, but i dont think to date i ever bought one to commemorate something or for a special occasion.......at least not yet............i do plan on buying myself a Sinn u1, as soon as i start my new business and it takes off, and i know i made it, that will be my gift to me fora job well done.........lets hope im able to reach that goal someday..................

but i did buy a ring because of someone wearing it............one of my favorite wrestler/actors, Stone Cold Steve Austin, was always wearing a skull ring, and it took me almost 6 years to track it down and the jeweler who made it and when i did , i ordered one......i love it , its the only ring i have.....and its the only one i want.....

OK I will play.

We were opening up a new location for our business in Orange Beach Alabama. I had been working very hard for over 3 weeks away from home getting the new restaurant/bar open. these are literally 20 hour days to complete exhaustion only to do it again the very next day with about 3-4 hours of sleep.

with 2 days left in my 3 week stay one of the vendors I had been working with everyday came in wearing a big black automatic diver. i loved it and just could not stop asking him questions about it and trying it on. As luck would have it we had similar sized wrists and his watch fit my arm. He let me wear it for a few hours while we were training the staff.

well that was the first time I had seen a Grand Diver and I just literally fell in love with it. I had no idea where to get one and he had received his as a gift.

On my last day in Alabama the guy came in and said he had researched the night before and found one for sale on Ebay. He said he had looked around and seen a bunch of them, and this one was at the best price and the auction ending soon. right there right then I bid and won the auction. I would have never know about the watch if I had not become friends with the guy during the grand opening build out of our new location and the luck of him receiving the watch as a gift a few months before.

Nothing elaborate such as a celebration, occasion, etc. But I have purchased with much glee because I discovered that I had some discretionary money!! The only "occasion" watch I have is one that my wife bought me for my birthday. It is a simple Pro Diver but it means a lot to me.

I buy watches to celebrate life. I have a massive blood clot (DVT) in right thigh up into the groin, I had a piece break off last year and it lodged in my lung (PE). Before I could do anything about it (911) my wife and I dislodged it our self with a lot of back and front chest slapping. Dr. said I was lucky. Now I buy more watches to celebrate that I am alive and can appreciate art.

Backstory . . .

I was getting divorced and my watch collection had to be sold off. So, my prized possessions were now gone. So, I move out, get my place and begin "starting over". I'm pretty sure that I kept a watch (I don't even remember which one) or bought one. Eventually, I lost it (or it was taken).

Then I was diagnosed with cancer.

I didn't wear a watch for about 9-10 months while I was in treatment. This was the worst time in my life.

At some point treatment ended, and I found myself looking for a watch. I ended up in TJMAXX with my girlfriend, looking for shirts, and saw a gorgeous, all gold layered Pro Diver which I bought on the spot and wore it every day for almost the next 2 years straight.

I gave this watch to my nephew last year as it's now a bit small on my wrist. He has an interest in watches and now has several automatic timepieces. Looks like he's been taking good care of it (I just photographed it last night). :)
