Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons !
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons !

my late father, Free French Fusillier Marin. la Marseillaise brought him to attention and tears in his eyes.

The four survivors of my late Father's French Marine Commando unit (Fussilier Marins) who fought the Nazis in WWII. Sadly none are still alive.

And my late Uncle Jacques who died several years ago at 96 years of age.

Jacques Jaffry

was born on October 11, 1920 ( Died September 9, 2016) at the home of his parents rue Carnot in Ouistreham (14). His father Jean is a customs officer and his mother Marie née LE BARS is without profession.

On August 21, 1943 it was listed for the STO in Hauterive (03), but was exempted from it under circular 1 M1 paragraph 14ter.

On September 25, 1943 he married Régine PATOZ in Clermont-Ferrand (63). He then declared as a profession: radio operator at the PTT. He is actually a radio operator at the GCR in Hauterive.

The GCR (Grouping of Radioelectric Controls) is based at Château des Cours in Hauterive (03).
Under the direction of Commander LABAT and Commander ROMON and under the guise of press listening and commercial listening for the Government of Pétain, the GCR actually works for the 2nd French Office.
Some examples:

    • establishment of Gestapo and Wehrmacht radio diagrams
    • analysis of the order of battle of the German forces
    • interception of German broadcasts and transmission in London
    • transmission to Cadiz of German messages for “Enigma” decryption.

Jacques JAFFRY was arrested in Hauterive on March 9, 1944 in the following circumstances according to the testimony of Henri DELL'AGLIO confirmed by Robert MAGENTIES, two operators of the GCR

"JAFFRY, who disappeared from the GCR for a few days, suddenly reappears, on March 8 or 9, 1944, and rushes into the listening post at Hauterive where he worked with - among others - DELL'AGLIO, to warn him: “the Gestapo is coming, let's save ourselves! " What theyre doing. But JAFFRY forgot to bring compromising documents. He retraces his steps… and gets caught, hence his deportation. ”

On May 12, 1944 he was one of 2073 men deported from Compiègne to Buchenwald where he arrived on the 14th in convoy N ° I.211.

He receives the registration number 49751 and after the quarantine he stays in the central camp of Buchenwald.

KL BUCHENWALD: The Buchenwald concentration camp, located about ten kilometers from the city of Weimar, was created in 1937. With the outbreak of war in 1939 and as the Wehrmacht advanced, the concentration camp population became international.
From 1943 to the end of 1944 or even at the very beginning of 1945, the camp became a pool of laborable labor at will and renewable at will for war production. The development of the Kommandos is increasing. Factories are installed inside the camp.
In all, Buchenwald will count 136 Kommandos. After eight years of existence during which approximately 56,000 prisoners perished and where 238,980 could be identified, the Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated on April 11, 1945.
