Picture Question

Question for the Freeks:

I know that if you are selling or trading a watch you need to post pictures of the actual watch for sale. What if you are just talking about a watch, asking questions, seeking an item, or other non-sale/trade reasons, is it OK to borrow pictures form another source, forum or site? What is the proper etiquette?

That's a good question Marc. I've often wondered the same thing as I'm not big into photography. I always use stock photos, but there are some from other owners that I would rather use b/c they take great pics. Often times I'm not sure who actually took the photo because they have been used by others. Great discussion topic my friend.

Honestly, I don't know the proper etiquet.

I like it when people ask to use my pics. I've never said no.

I'll use stock pics, taken from the web, if I don't have one of my own.

Honestly, if there's a pic to borrow (for discussion purposes), I just borrow it. However, if I know it's someone's personal pic, I'll ask them first.

If anyone at this forum ever wants to borrow anything of mine feel free.

Just remember, if you win a big prize we split 50/50 :lol

Ultimately it is almost impossible to stop people from using any image they want. Sure someone could initiate legal action, but then you just stop using it.

Typically I personally use this line of thinking

1) it is my pic - I just post any time or way I want

2) It is someone elses pic I normally have it associated with the same story or daily deal page. Or the pic has credit printed on it (like the name of a website)

3) If I use someone else's pic that I know I will mention that in the post. something like "Pic borrowed from _______

If there is disclaimer to not use the image, don't use it. And NEVER crop an image to remove such a disclaimer so you can use it...

Marc that an excellent question for many. Iam sure there will be a lot of pros and cons. In my case I have had two strokes and I shake so badly that I no longer take pictures as they always come out blurred. I have only owned and used a PC less then a year and if I had pictures or borrowed some I would need someone to post them. IF I had pics I would let anyone use them and I believe I should get permission to use someone elses pictures.

If I borrow a picture from a fellow watch enthusiast i'll make sure i credit them with the picture, if it's a stock pic I'll leave it as is with any names on it usually.

I enjoy taking pics and so more often if it's a watch I own it's what i'll post.

I think if you are talking about a watch and the member is asked to use the pic, I don't think it would bother anyone here. I believe we as a community, are a close nit family. For me, It wouldn't bother me at all. Great question though.

Most people don't care if you borrow a pic as long as they get the credit. I post alot of pics on the Scion forums and tell the guys and gals that if you see a good shot of your car and want the pic, copy it. I have photobucket account set to public but I'm thinking of changing it to private then just post the password to access subfolders for car shows and such.
