In my own opinion, here are the watches I consider to be the best 'value' for under 500. Let me know what you guys think:

1. SEIKO SARB033
The exquisite Seiko SARB033 is powered by the premium Seiko 6R15 caliber self-winding movement that can also be hand wound and hacked. It is the same caliber that powers most of the Seiko Prospex line of watches. The movement has a generous 50 hour power reserve. The case has a fine brushed finish and the black dial sports luminous hands and silvertone hour markers. A date display is shown at the 3 o'clock position. The stainless steel bracelet has a deployant clasp with a dual push-button release. A scratch resistant sapphire crystal is used along with an exhibition back that allows you to view the movement in action. Water resistant 100 meters. This is definitely a luxury range watch that is available at an affordable price. An excellent timepiece for sure.

2. Tissot Heritage Visodate Automatic
A classic design while retaining a modern, minimalist feel. The slightly domed sapphire crystal looks amazing. The white face is slightly silvery in real life. ETA 2836-2 movement. Sapphire display case back. Amazing for the price. The deployment leather band it comes with is terrible though.

3. Hamilton Khaki King
Hamilton is a historic brand that was once based in the US and now is under the Swatch group. They make fantastic first-time automatic purchases. The military styling is simple and functional. The 24hr hours on the watch is a nice touch especially for a military watch. A major distinction on this watch over other Khakis and other watches of this price range is the Day-of-the-Week and Date window at 12. With a leather band this can be a great day to day watch and swap out a bracelet for a more dressy look. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

4. Seiko SARB065 Cocktail Time
Classic (although big) dress watch with a beautiful dial, created in collaboration with Ishigaki Shinobu. A reddit favourite, wears well with most any classy strap choice.

5. Hamilton Jazzmaster
Great watch, not much to say.

6. Seiko SARB017
Another great Seiko in this price range, and a sub favourite. The green sunburst dial with gold markings is just stunning. The inner rotating compass bezel is more stylish than useful but, like the cathedral hands, just fits with the coherent overall theme - it's not called the Alpinist for nothing. 50 hour power reserve, great lume, 200m WR, sapphire crystal, and all the build quality and accuracy you expect from Seiko in this price range. Looks good on a bracelet but, to my mind, best on a brown leather strap. The latest in a line with a strong history as well - there are some really nice vintage Alpinist models out there.

I can't argue with any of your picks. However, this is subject to personal preference as there are so many to choose from. Anything from a classic Seiko Orange Monster to a Micro brand diver might fill the bill for the right buyer. I think it all about what sings to you and what price range you live in.

One thing for certain, there is no shortage of choices under $500.

I agree with Marc, and you could probably make an entire list of just Seiko's alone.

Plenty of Micro-Brands in there to fill that slot, besides Seikos.

I'd through in a couple of Citizens, the odd Chinese and Russian as well

SOme cool german pieces with miyota or swiss movements are also worth a look.

Never been a Hamilton fan, so I'd take thise out

Christopher Ward would get a couple in under that limit

Nice list! I’ve always liked Seiko watches and my favorite is the 6M 25 series with the “dancing hands”. I have been able to acquire this gold one and a standard one, both in pristine condition, within the past year. I am very happy to have found them as Seiko quit making them in the 1990’s.

Best under $500? Hundreds - far too many to list. "Best" is a pretty ambiguous term.
