Did anyone have time to see Seiko's 1969 Quartz Astron 50th
Anniversary Limited Edition by chance?

The new watch pays tribute to the Quartz Astron. Which was the
world's first quartz watch, introduced fifty years ago. With just a
few of the details including a 40.9mm 18kt yellow gold hand-carved
case, 100m WR, a box style AR-coated sapphire crystal, a hairline
pattered dial with faceted gold, and black markers, and hands, a
black crocodile strap, and in house Seiko solar caliber 3X22 with
GPS behind cool case-back.

Check it out...

Yes, I saw it indeed. The case finish reminds me of the infamous 'Bark' finish on some Rolex models. It's not comparable but it airs the same, strange, undefinable feeling. I don't like it very much, a smooth case would make it more understated. The 'GPS Solar" indication also takes a bit away from the overall 'vintage' look. But having said all that, I would gladly take it as a present. I won't mention the price, this is watch for the connoisseur.

P.S. The strap on this watch is brown :D And the finish of the strap lining could be better.

I actually like the original piece better. Don't much care for the "hand carved" case or that new chapter ring/internal bezel. And the fact that it costs more than my car. But, gold is gold I guess...

It's strange with the finish isn't it guys?! ..Definitely grabs you,
and makes you take a second, third, and fourteenth look ! :bounce:

However, can see where a smooth case would be beautiful as
well on these. I guess they tried to keep it close to the original.
Wish they would have kept the price closer to the original like
everyone is saying.

P.S. Thanks for the lesson on the 'Bark' finish by Rolex Frans.
Don't think I had heard of that before. Thanks so much !

Thanks to ALL of you !!! :)

I still can't figure out why they chose to us that finish. If we take inflation into account, the 1969 Astron would cost US$ 8745 now (or there about). So the 2019 Astron is still 4 times as expensive.

Below the 1969 Astron, look at the case finish:

Wow Frans, honestly didn't even know the original 1969 model
would be so much today. ..But yeah, four times as much for
the brand new version is hard to imagine ! ..It's like they, or
watch companies in general are always trying to one up things.
With prices, and just the all around designs getting a really
exaggerated updating.

Seriously, in your picture, you can see the striations within
the original, but they are much more subtle. ..The newer
version seems to have made everything more prominent.
As if you were looking at that classic finish with a magnifying
glass.

It's really something actually ! ..THX a ton for the pic,
along with info sir !!! :thumb::thumb:

Now that's what I'm talkin bout ! I'd rather be sporting one of these if I could get my hands on one. Don't like the deeper hand carvings in the new one, or that chapter ring as I said earlier. The old one just looks so pure. :thumb: Great pic Frans.:happy0065:

Couldn't agree more. Hand carving = $$$$$$$ = a reason to jack up the price. They come up for sale once in a while on eBay but they vanish as fast like a snowball in a pizza oven :D.

Enough grumpy old men talk, it is an homage to the original, never needs a fresh battery, is caesium atomic clock accurate and only 50 will be made. So not all bad. But just not for us because of various reasons.

The 1969 original was $1250. Adjusted for inflation that makes $8745 in today's dollars. The 2019 price is 4.1 times that.

Inflation rates on some products can be nebulous, electronics for instance. This new model is still 28 times the price of the original.
