Slideshow of my Back Yard Project

Back story . . . There has always been water running through my yard during a rain storm. When it rains heavy enough, I get a pond in my back yard. I've tried a variety of things over the years to eliminate the pond . . . but when it rains . . . THERE WILL BE A POND! :lol

So, I changed the most annoying aspect of "the pond" . . . it blocks my way to my shed, or to take garbage to the can.

I changed the entry and exit point onto my back patio. It works so much better. It entailed uprooting and translating 3 bushes, half a dozen paving stones, 30 decorative bricks, and bunch of dirt. I also had to exhume 3 guinea pigs that were my niece and nephews, and re-bury them.

I'll still need to put down mulch and flowers. I was able to close a gap between two bushes, by moving one . . . then I transplanted a 3rd bush to make more room to exit on the left (coming out the back door).

I'll now use the area that was the entrance way as a small garden for my nephew Ryan (the goofball standing in the pond in the 1st pic). He'll plant tomatoes, spinach, peas, sunflowers, and something else that I can't remember.

This took about 4.5 hour and was all I could handle today. :)

We don't get enough water out here I did mine so the water does pond up where all my plants are. Plus my back yard was also sloped so I had to terrace it with retaining block.

Rick if it was mine I would bring in a couple dump load of topsoil and angle every thin away from your structures and let the water flow out of the yard.:lol
I've put 2.5 tons of top soil there and it just washes away! :lol

There are a series of houses that sit on ground that's about 5-8 feet higher than my property. It doesn't matter what I do . . . the water still pours into my yard.

Thanks, everyone for your kind words!

Nice job Rick! I have been trying to lay down more mulch like I do every spring, but everywhere I go is out of the regular cedar chips. Every place I go says the same thing. It is the most used mulch but we don't have it yet for some reason:eek:. Makes sense not to have what people want :madd.Guess I gotta wait some more.

Thank you all! :)

After looking at the pics of the back patio . . . I DEFINITELY need to change out that thin wire fence around the flower beds/bushes. I think I'll do that on Wednesday as tomorrow is supposed to be hotter than today! :BE

I also forgot to mention that my nephew will be planting a small vegie garden in the open areas of the "flower bed" you see pictured below. We'll clear away any extra mulch, and the soil underneath is incredibly rich! :)

I had trouble locating TRUE cedar mulch (pieces, chunks). What I ended up with is cedar shreddings/shavings.

It's not what I wanted, but @ $38 for a pickup truck load . . . I'll take it! :)

Looks great Rick. I need to get out in my yard and do some major renovation.
