Brought my Rado Ceramic to local jeweler for simple battery replacement.
Turned out to be not so simple. He cracked ceramic bracelet link (and glued it back together...poorly)
& didn't even replace cover properly, which proceeded to fall off later that day. Sent it to Authorized Service Center in Secaucus for repair.
They sent me evaluation & estimate.
$30 to replace link, which is very reasonable.
But also sent the following comments.....

  • The movement shows signs of moisture.
  • The case shows signs of shock.
  • The bezel shows signs of shock.
  • The bracelet shows signs of wear.
  • The crown is worn.

That part is an additional $200.
I purchased this Rado new in 1994. Don't wear it very often. Never dropped, abused, or exposed to water.
So how can it possibly show signs of moisture...and shock?

It could be a Rolex and then you could add another $1,000 to the price tag!

Does your watch have a quartz or mechanical movement? I would ask them for more detail on why they recommend what sounds like a near complete service of your watch.

Concerning the moisture: 1994 was 27 years ago, quite some time to ask any rubber seals and gaskets to last. I would imagine they are rather dry and brittle at this point, hence the ingress of moisture (given the right circumstances, even high humidity could create moisture damage).

In regard to the crown being worn: Is it a screw-down crown or simply push/pull type? If a screw-down, the threads may have been damaged (cross threaded) at some point, hence their saying it has a worn crown. Again, you may want to ask for more detail.

As far as the other stuff goes, it sounds to me as if they are simply asking if you want it polished to remove any marks on the watch and bracelet. That's up to you.

It does sound crazy JETBLU, and you know, was thinking..maybe
just get the bracelet repaired like you originally wanted. 🙂

And forget about those other things. From what you are saying,
you treat the watch really well, and from here at least, the watch
looks to be a great shape. ..It's only the link that needs fixing. (y)

Then in the future, if the watch is acting up in any way because
of those supposed other issues, then you know where to go. But
honestly would just take care of the link for now.

Want to wish you luck, as well as thank you for asking the question,
and coming up with the topic !

It's quartz.
It actually is what they consider a "complete service." I listed "replace cracked ceramic link" and "attach battery cover" on form. I'm guessing it's standard to do a full service on a watch that is 27 yrs. old.
The crown is a push/pull type, so I'm really not sure how it would become worn from occasional use.
The bracelet showed no sign of wear at all....except for the obvious cracked link. I think it waseven stated on their for ceramic can't be polished, and from what I understand ceramic can't be scratched.

Thanks for the info!

I may just do that.
