I know alot of you guys and girls on her know alot about dogs. I adopted a new dog on Sunday and I dont know what it is about me but animals love me and get attached very quickly. Well anytime I leave my house the new dog doesnt stop barking until I get back which drives everyone in my house crazy . I did some research online about it and will be taking her to the vet, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or has dealt with this before?

Congrats, on your new addition!

What's her name?

As far as your question... I think everyone that's ever owned a dog, hasdealt with some form of seperation anxiety, with their canine..

As for me, most definately!

I know you've schedule an appointment with your local vet, and I'm confident that they'll be able to assist. However as an owner, there are a few things to look at before you act on any sort of preventive actions...

First things, first....

You just received the dog, so you and the dog will be going through the treaded "feeling out" period. What does that mean? It means that you've got to begin to lay some ground rules down, for your new dog. Again, don't expect for this to happen overnight.

It's a long process, that will pay dividends... If done correctly.

Afterall, dogs are known, pack animals and your dog will need to identify who the "ALPHA" is, within his new pack.

Once this is identified, everything else should fall into place nicely.

Her name is Gabby.

She also follows me everywhere in the house. If I get up and go into another room she follows me. I dont care about that. She just got so attached to me. I have no issues with working with her. Its just other members of my family are not as patient as me.

Here is the problem as I see it.

#1 if the Dog only does this when you leave is because you have not let her into your Pack so too speak. She at this time does not know where she fits in, and has this issue because she only knows and respects you.

You need to introduce her too the other family members, and she has decided that you are hers. So my suggestion is for you, too stop paying attention to her only, and set some rules for her.

Example when you come home, you pay attention to the wife and kids or who ever is in your family before, you pay attention too her. Once you have ignored her, and it is her turn, not only do you pay attention too her, but the rest of your family pays attention too her as well. Thats where it has too end, then every 1/2 hr a family member pays attention too her, for 10 to 30 seconds but you do not. Now I know easier said then done because she will want your undivided attention, but you need to ignore her, and correct her when she wants attention. You have too be the last one in the rotation, and you give her no more attention then anyone else does.

Last but not least you need to pick a person besides yourself too feed the dog. One other thing that needs too take place is if you are the leader of the Pack then you and the family need too go for a walk every day. When a dog walks with the Pack then she becomes part of the pack, then and only then will she feel comfortable with everyone in your Pack.

Isnt Dog ownership fun!!!

Been there and done this many times!!! Good luck, I guarantee you within 10 days of you doing these things every day, the dog will not have these issue's!

Gabby is beautiful!

How old is she?

It's good to know that you're willing work with her, however the rest of your family really needs to be a part of her development.

Not trying to preach but...

"You Get, What You Give"

Especially when it comes to training dogs. I'm looking forward to hear what your vet tells you, please keep us up to date and if there's anything that you may need assistance with...

Please do not hesitate..

Be Easy

Ron has a lot of it right on the nose.....

I have bred and shown dogs since I was in high school. So dealing with dogs is not foreign to me. Separation Anxiety with rescued dogs is a big problem...since they have more than likely been abused in the past and are not use to being part of a pack. The best thing is to talk to your vet and get help. Getting a rescued dog is a great thing to do, but they do come with problems. As the Dog Whisperer says...you have to recondition the dog and train the owner.

A good dog training center should be able to help you. There are lots of really good sites and groups on line that can help you....Check out You Tube for Dog Whisperer videos....

My 7 year old Bichon had separation anxiety issues when she was young...but I used some of the things my vet taught me to recondition her.

Dogs live in the moment. Don't draw attention to the fact that you are leaving. Like treats or extra petting. Some people say"Daddy's gotta go to work now". Let the dog see you come in and out of the house often and different periods of time. I was lucky this worked for me. Best bet is an obedience school.
