There are over 120 pieces of proposed regulatory legislation aimed at the internetcurrently in congress. Most of the proposals have little to do with the areas of the Internet that could use regulation such as kiddie porn, hate web sites, on line "pharmacies" but more to do with taxing, charging for use, throttling bandwidth, privacy, anonymity, and private messaging "nettapping"

There are 5 -6 major internet providers trying to establish a pyramid pricing structure that would charge the basic monthly rate we are all used to but then a monthly "usage charge"based on the number of bytes transferred to and from your system. This "charge" would, in some cases, take the form of buying "levels" of service that promise different speeds. In other words for the basic fee you would get a degraded through-put up to the premium service which would be roughly what you get now.

Other issues are individual States trying to recoup taxes for on-line sales, which has a very large lobby - the local chambers of commerce whose members are "loosing sales" because the internet is (mostly) tax free (although that is usually negated by shipping and handling fees.

As Internet users it is important to educate ourselves on these issues and let our opinions get to the powers-that-be before we see drastic changes we didn't know were coming. For more information on the individual proposals google "internet regulations". I would post the links , but there are just too many and I didn't want to pick and choose since that would inevitably be very biased.

what do you think ??? Right, Wrong ? would these things change your usage, would they hurt or help

On the tax issue I am indifferent. I assume that will eventually be regulated.

On the charges to use the internet in general, I do not see how this will not keep coming DOWN as competition by the providers increases. Could it eventually be free and available to all, sure, but I don't see a way that could happen without being completely government controlled, which I assume most will oppose.

Will it become easier and easier to access the internet from everywhere as new technologies are utilized in expanding infrastructures around the globe - absolutely.

Thank you maui_freek, I was unaware of the information you mentioned above. Let's not forget that the creation of the internet was paid for by tax dollars! To be taxed on top of being taxed is not the anwser but a band aide. We pay to get internet from a provider, whether over the phone line or from a sattelite, and that service is taxed! If they want to make us pay more for what we now enjoy, something should be offered. For most folks the internet has become a place to learn, socialize and share. etc.I would definetly supportan agencyto oversee chat rooms, porn of all types, to track people who create viruses and to regulate purchases. etc. Create a tax to make the internet safer for folks like uswho enjoy and want to be safe. Do not create a tax for something already created by our tax dollars! ....Bob

I think a tax is inevitable (as they say death and taxes are the only sure thing) ....however, with more and more wide area networks the internet is now used as a marketing tool. Stop by any Panera, Starbucks, or the like and they give customers free access. I think this will become more common in the future. Prices for home service will be kept in check by competition for a while much like cable/FIOS/satellite TV has been. Will it become more expensive, yes, but I don't think by much in the near future.

In this recession the government is doing anything and everything to increase taxes. This is happening from the top all the way down. This is unfortunately the "American Way". I won't continue as my comments could get quite political, but is it right?? "No" Will it change "No". I guess we just have to accept the inevitable. Stepping off of my soap box Ha Ha LOL!!!

I've said it before. This constant search for more tax dollars is killing this country. It's all money, money, money. But what do we get for it, not much. What is happening with this country. We're not doing anything but destroying the spirit that built it. This constant redistribution of wealth is going to turn us into the biggest welfare state, ever. It just can't sustain itself anymore. I just read a story about the fact that after NASA retires the space shuttle we will no longer have a manned space program. Obama's new budget kills the Constellation program. We will only be able to get up to the space station, that was mostly funded by the USA, by using the Russian space program. Also, do you realize that last year more Patents were registeredby China than the US for, I believe, the first time. It seems that people just don't want to invent stuff here anymore. It's just not Obama this stuff started a while ago. I fear we are in a non-stop death spiral as a country. A country in decline, much like the Roman Empire that collapsed, not from invasion, but from the inside out. Look at the news. We just don't make anything here anymore. We're a consumer society, we're getting to be like the Lamprey that attaches itself to the Shark. We add nothing. We want to buy and buy, but in the end, where is the money going to come from? This country was built on the principle of always moving forward. I believe we're just spinning our wheels today.

So there.

Hi Toe, some good points you made. We keep hearing about a new world order. What is it? It seems that as a country we are dependant on other countries, which does not seem to be helping us. I think this country was at it's best when we built everything. I lost count of the deficit number. I think it is 11 trilion with more to be added. We need to figure a way to pay that down soon and stop spending tax dollars wastefully. Our country needs to independant and be a leader. If other countries want a new world order, let them follow us. Just a thought. ....Bob
