I can say that I like both Single Malts and Blends. Like you, I do not like peated whiskies.
I find a lot of blends (JW Red etc) can vary from batch to batch, sometimes they have a nice rounded flavour, sometimes very peated, other times it tastes like vodka and food colouring. Famous Grouse itself has a slight peat character to it on the finish.
Fortunately, there are quite a few Single Malts that have zero to little peat/smoke flavour, a couple include:
For the affordable option (which is more often than not) I go for a Glen Grant "The Major's Reserve", not bad and not that expensive, but still a single malt.
