One of the best parts of servicing time gages is the many stories that their owners tell about them. From time to time, an especially unusual piece comes in. Such is the case with this little Bulova.
It is not unusual in a horological way; it has a regular 15j , handwind movement inside a presse brass case. What is unusual is the way it came into the owners possession.
He received it as an award for selling the most magazine subscriptions as part of a middle school contest in 1950.
I think that's pretty cool!! I mean, it's 1950! Before automatics came out, before 5ATM cases, when owning a watch really was something, especially one with a heavily jeweled movement from a brand headquartered in New York City. It's quite the award for selling magazines.... This watch was only worth 10 bucks, maybe a bit more, when new, but that is when a new car cost about 2 grand.
Although it is now monetarily only worth slightly more than a service, when it comes to it's history, for the family who owns it, it is priceless. I feel fortunate to play a part in it's preservation.
Does anybody else have any other watches that have been awarded or presented for any feat or accomplishment? Please share with us
