Today I would like to talk to you about a truly special Rolex GMT Master Ref. 6542. The watch is owned by a well-known Italian dealer, a true living encyclopedia of watchmaking and in particular of Rolex. The family business in the city of Lucca (Tuscany) has continued uninterrupted since 1655. Apparently it would be the only example with a white, almost ivory-colored, dial (matt in this case). The watch is made of gold and I would say that the authenticity of this dial and the fact that it was produced for a gold watch can be ruled out beyond any reasonable doubt (the applied indices are in fact made of gold). It is also clear that it is not a dark dial that has faded to the point of becoming ivory white: if that were the case, the writing would not have been black and would have lightened together with the rest of the dial; the typography was certainly black from the beginning and has remained so. For comparison I put a not so common but still widespread version with a bronze dial. Among the two watches there are only 44 serial numbers of difference so they were produced not only in the same period but probably in the same month if not even in the same week.....for Rolex 44 watches are really nothing. Apart from the different bezel insert (aluminium for the bronze one and bakelite for the white one) the dials are truly identical and therefore most likely come from the same subcontractor. I like the idea that it was a "test dial" which was then not put into production and which for some reason was still mounted on a gold 6542 and sold. I know the owner and I can assure you that a famous German football player has been courting him to buy it for over 30 years but the dealer is holding onto it tightly
