So here we are, almost 8 years in the business (With Reactor, 34 overall)and we cannot figure out when the square and rectangle shapes in watch cases became so unpopular.

Any idea on what happened? All of the guys/women in this forum really only show off or talk about round and 50+MM....

Love to hear what you guys have to say as we still think we can make a bad a** watch that is no round...

Thoughts?

Haven't the foggiest idea. Maybe the diver style just took over or they're easier to produce. My wife use to call watches CLOCKS. Maybe that's what she meant. Round like a wall clock.:)

I like mostly round, i have mostly round except for yours.

I'm a round fan....just my preference. I've tried the 'square' thing and it just has not thrilled me. I have a few hybrids like this one. Kind of round and square all at once.

I enjoy square and rectangle watches.

I have a number of them.

You'll hear no complaints from me.

I think that a lot of people have made dive watches popular and the fact that it's very difficult, if not impossible, to get an acceptable depth rating on a square watch have made these more plentiful.

Great point on the water resistance. We can get a square watch to about 150 meters and that is the max at this point.

The other question is, who the heck is going deeper than that anyway?

Yes we make an awesome 1000M watch too, but would that be a reason you would not buy a square watch? Well not you...lol you said you have a few.

Perplexing.

i have one square and love it

the Reactor i most recently considered purchasing from a seller on WUS was a Photon and my first Reactor will most likely be one of your squares since they're far more chunky than most squares.

i'd love to have a Tag Monaco (maybe after i hit the lottery :lol)

Well said, toecutter! Technically, from what I have read the design has been about water resistance. I currently own about 6 square or rectangle timepieces and really like them all - 3 of them are REACTOR, with a fourth on the way.... That beautiful ION I won on this forum...

Tony, you are right in your assessment of wondering WHY?Probably less than 1% of our entire world's population will ever venture below 120 feet in an ocean. That leaves only one answer for your conundrum. EGO! It's just another way for testosterone filled men to compare and or compete with one another. If my diver (watch) can withstand greater depths than yours it must be better and more costly. It all goes back to hunting and gathering.... Since we can no longer (as a whole society) "hunt it down" and bring it home for supper, we collect, (watches and everything else),drive fast cars, and play sports long past our prime in order to "prove" our worth! Thus the real reason for ROUND watch dials! EGO, AND MORE EGO!!!! :%:%

I have tried many since I started collecting and the NFW AutoPilot was the only one I could pull off. I even kept trying after I moved my NFWs and just never felt good about them. I guess round is just theshape of choice/preference at this time. I look at it like ties.....they go from wide to skinny and back over time. Eventually the square shape will gain popularity again I bet.....round is just in right now.

That is exactly how I have always felt. Square or rectangle watches just have never been my personal style or look that I liked. That simple for me.

I have recently added a couple square watches to my collection. I wonder if the stray away from square watches is just simply the typical ebb and flow of the consumer's tastes. Same reason the larger sizes seemed to rise and back off. It is probably the obsession with depth though. I was a jewelery store a couple of weeks ago and happened to hear a customer say, "I don't buy any watches with less then a 500meter water resistance!" Me being the smart a$$ that I am had to ask if he was a professional diver. He said yes, why? I replied, do you often find yourself at depths of 1500 feet? He said, yes I do. I walked away laughing. :b:b

I can't say why the trend drifted away from square or rectangle. I can only speak for myself, it seemed that the the ones I liked just seemed to be round. My eye is changing and I notice that watches like the Flux, Photon, and Ion are intriguing me now. I speak about the Reactor non circular watches because that is the brand I am familiar with. I know there are others, but I am on a serious Reactor kick right now. Don't get me wrong, I love all watches, just some more than others.

I also love the Monaco, and would love to have one.

With Tony starting this thread makes me think that perhaps the new release that is happening soon means there will be some non circular shaped awesomeness. Giddy up.

I think square just looks awkward on the wrist, even worse when getting into the larger cases. You didn't mention 'tonneau' cases ? Look at how well Invicta pumps out the 'Lupah'. Modified (crossed?)square/round. Phillip did well with their 'Panama', altho I think thatcase was associated with the name, to present a sort of luxuary. The 'tonneau' seems to me to be better able to curve around the wrist. Won't go into oval...bleaaaah !!!

I think it is all about the fit. I agree with you on the HUGE square cases. I think it can be done at 38-42mm the right way.

We are not planning to release anything that is not round any time soon. However we do have some wicked designs in the pipeline when that trend comes back.

Detective Clyde....LOL good line of thinking but we want our new releases to sell. Even though we think we avesome cool things going on in non-round right now, we will wait it out. Like how you think C.
