Talking Bigger isn’t always better

In the span of just two days I bought the NES Classic Mini, the SNES Classic Mini and the C64 (Commodore) Mini. They are all pint sized versions of their vintage original counterparts. All with HDMI output so you can plug them into any modern monitor or TV set. Pre-loaded with up to 64 games but for all of them some geniuses have made firmware hacks to make it possible to load hundreds of original games and more. As a teenager I never owned them and the only games console I ever bought was PS3 but just for the Blu-ray player because the whole machine was cheaper than a dedicated Blu-ray player back then!

It’s just another trip down memory lane I guess but the concept behind them is brilliant, Nintendo sold 2.3 million copies of the first NES Mini and just released the second wave. I was on a waiting list for the first wave but missed out. They are about 70 bucks each and there even is a mini Atari version now. But all of them lack Zaxxon or Super Zaxxon out of the box, the game that left me awe struck the first time I laid eyes on it in the lobby of a cinema theatre called Calypso.

I really need to pick a NES up... I'm a gamer, much to my lady's dismay.

Yes and no. I have wasted many an hour on Doom, Doom II, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem. And the occasional Leisure Suit Larry As you can see, all ancient stuff. FPS I like best followed by games like Need for Speed of which I still have parts one to seven (the first ones DOS only). But that’s mostly it. I still have an Atari 2600 somewhere, given to me by a colleague who wanted to throw it in the bin. It came with two cartridges, Asteroids and one of them after market 148-in-1 affairs. 140 of the games are crap.

But as many of you frequent WF visitors must have gathered by know, all of these activities and purchases are just testament to the undeniable fact that I cannot let go of my youth. Even parts of it I never lived. And it is growing stronger. Although I cannot stand the words ‘vintage’ or ‘retro’ any more, it is not without reason I ordered a Straton Speciale. And my whole view on it has shifted quite dramatically, the things I used to hate have now become the subject of my affection so to speak Mesh bands are just one example.

But these things bring you to my life and boy do I need that lately. Thank you for reading.
