Default Grail Quest

As most of you know, I am a huge advocate of affordable watches. (mostly because I can afford them)

we all have our "grail" watches and mine, true to my nature, is pretty affordable as well (as far as "grails" go anyway) I always reasoned that there was no point in having a grail watch that was most likely never going to be within my reach, yet it should be something that i really love and would likely be keeping for the long haul. For me, it is the Omega speedmaster reduced. (alternatively the professional, but for my 6.75 inch wrists I think the 39mm would fit nicely)

I have an opportunity coming up shortly that, if all goes well, will allow me to make a watch purchase previously well out of my reach. I will have a budget of approximately $2000 and i was thinking it would be the perfect time to snag that speedmaster. i believe that will be enough money to pick up a speedmaster reduced in good condition with box and papers.

but before I seriously look into this possibility, i would like to consider what other options i might have in that same price bracket. I could rattle off several dozen options at $500 or less, but at the $2k mark i am honestly at a loss since that isnt the price bracket im used to looking into.

so...grail-esque watch at $2k or less.....no particular brand in mind, no particular style, not a huge dress watch fan so it would likely be either a diver or a chronograph. Gimmie some options!

My watch brother,

No alternative pieces, but perhaps a bit of unsolicited advice?
Ask yourself if not getting that grail is going to haunt you...while you're wearing the consolation watch(s) ?
I made this mistake more than once.
If that special piece that you have dreamed about doesn't cut it unload the watch. If you acquire it at a fair price maybe you can get most of your investment back to fund another piece.
At at a minimum, you can say tried it , sold it...and moved on.

Wish you the best & keep us posted!

Scott

If I was looking for something in that price range, I’d definitely go with an Anonimo.

That said, it sounds you want the Speedmaster. Don’t compromise. If you need to wait longer, the payoff will just be greater!

Good luck!

My Grail isn't even a watch!!!!
My Grail is a Martin D42 dreadnaught guitar. MSRP is $7,000.00
If I owned a D42 D45 or D35 things would be right with the

You know WM, was thinking how going in the Speedmaster direction for
this price especially is incredible !

Like you said, you can find a ton of $500 options, but for $2000, or so,
it's pretty hard to equal, or beat your Speedmaster you are after sir.
Plus as you said above, this is already your grail watch that you have
been eying. For me to find other watches would just make things more
confusing for you.

I second the motion from Roarry for the Monta!

I own a Monta Triumph and that watch has a fit and finish that is superior to the 16610 Rolex I own!

Their Dive watch is even more impressive than that. It is a 40mm case without the Maxi Case oversized lugs like the newer Subs have, so it should wear very well on your wrist.

This watch also has a newer Eterna Movement, which I'm sure is as good if not superior to the Rolex 3135.

This watch company was started by the owners of Everest Straps who make the top aftermarket straps for Rolex. They designed this watch from the ground up, and it is the real deal, and if they were marketed in brick and mortar stores they would be going for around $4k to $5K

For just under $2k this is the best bang for you buck watch you can buy!

What kind of music do you play on those guitars?

Is your pool deeper than the 150 feet it's rated for?

My two grail watches were a Tudor and a speedy.
The tudors i like are usually above the $2k Mark, like the pelagos and the black bay.
Not a fan of the Tudor ranger.
Figured a speedy would probably be easier to find in my price range than a Tudor. I feel like I need another grand or two before looking at tudors.

I got this right off of the Omega Forums..

Thank you for your e-mail.

I can confirm that as your timepiece is water resistant to 50 metres, it is not recommended that you swim in this watch. A 50 metre water resistant watch is statically pressured to water resistant properties and not whilst the watch is moving through water, therefore it is best that you do not swim in your timepiece.

Anything over 100 metres would be sufficient for swimming.

I hope this helps and if you do require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

So I went and bought a Seamaster Pro. Now I have to decide what one to wear

Happy Days!! "
I take my more inexpensive 50m wristwatches into the pool, I wouldn't take a Chronograph with pushers that only has 50m WR and costs over $4K into the pool, that's for sure!

The static versus dynamic fallacy in pressure was debunked many times.

Seems like we have two separate letters from Omega that are contradicting each other.

Static pressure has been debunked, pushers on Chronographs on mechanical watches hasn't. All you need to do is accidentally hit one of those pushers while in the water and its bye bye time! I wouldn't take a chance with a watch that costs as much as that one does and bump one of the pushers by accident in the pool.

If you are adventurous knock yourself out!
