Default GecoPhone BBC - ca. 1924

Quite some time ago I showed a crystal radio receiver that was completely taken apart because I wanted to restore it.It is a 1924 BBC GecoPhone BC 1001. The set I bought came in the wrong enclosure but by sheer chance I was able to get an empty enclosure with a slightly damaged lid. The headphones are the result of piecing together two different ones (same model) to get a decent looking one. Another piece for the museum

Oh boy Frans ! What are the chances of you being able to
track that down like that?!! It's remarkable really, and then on top of that
you put an original set of headphones together?!!

I'm not sure which is the icing on top. They both are !! ..You have to

be overjoyed, and on cloud nine right about now. Giant congratulations
to you Frans ! Thanks so much for the pic ! ..Just is extraordinary sir !!!

Nice one there Frans. Are those earphones original to the set? I know some of the Gecophones used Siemens headphones

I believe they came without headphones and you just bought a pair of your liking or whatever your friendly radio shopkeeper had to offer. These are Brandes Superior 'Matched Tone' (made in England). Very common back then. In The Netherlands you would probably buy a pair made by Philips.

There are two items that are still missing: an outside honeycomb coil to assist with the tuning, these are made again and available new on eBay. And, very difficult to find, two prong headphone connector as mine came without. These are very difficult to source and the one I found is far too expensive for such a simple item.

Of course there's more. This year all of my 'stuff' will find a place in 4 meters of bookcases with glass doors and separate compartments, compliments of IKEA LED lighting, slanted book holders, the works.

I sourced it about a year ago. Although I absolutely do not like their policy (they have a vice like grip on shipping and the costs involved), eBay is a great source for stuff like this. I tend to avoid buying from outside the EU because shipping costs and import duty can easily exceed the price of the item bought. And some sellers charge insane amounts for that.

Well you did an unbelievable job Frans, and can't imagine it turning out
any nicer !

Plus I think it makes it even more special because you actually assembled
your own using original parts. ..It's like you created it, or built it yourself !
Which just shows how much you enjoy these, and the time these beauties
came from.

Can't wait for the museum to open down the road so we can take a
tour of everything sir. Really is astounding. ..All of it !

Thanks once again !!!

I had a friend (ex cop, lost track of him) who had a really, really nifty Japanese receiver. I think a JRC. Cost an absolute fortune (>6,000 Guilders back in 2000) and it came with an even more impressive antenna on the roof of his house. Also a fortune. With a special interface card in his PC he could decipher Morse code in real time and put the text on his monitor. Very sophisticated equipment. A year later I met his wife (turned out to be his ex wife) on the train station near the subsidiary I worked back then. She had enough of his selfish spending and lack of attention.....

Frans:
My dad cut a horizontal dipole antennae (K5MOW knows about those) to the frequencies
my crystal set would recieve. Used it several years too. Lot's of enjoyment to a 8 year old.

When I served the USAF in the U K our home radio station transmitted eastward and I
could actually recieve the low freq ground signal.

During WW2 a Ham operator's son was scanning the frequencies used by Gen Rommels
tank forces used and reported to the War Dept. Crucial in a N African tank battle.
