Packaging:

The strap arrived at my home in a padded envelope. Inside the package, the strap was wrapped in tissue and safe from damage during transit. This packaging is more than adequate and helps the company to keep their costs and, therefore, prices at a relatively low level.

Photos of strap:

When you think about it, a repurposed leather armchair is probably a perfect source for vintage leather with a patina surface. That is exactly what Aaron Tan, the owner of HKTAN Straps was thinking when he created his line of “Vintage Tan” line of straps. The photo below is of the actual chair that was used for these straps…sort of gross looking, right?!?! Well, that is what I thought at first sight! But then again, so are those ammo pouches that all of our vintage ammo straps are made from, right? So, I got past that and looked forward to getting the opportunity to have a closer look at this this unique creation from Aaron!

The tone of the leather for this line of straps is generally a medium tan. However, I imagine it really depends on the section of the chair that the leather strips are sourced from, right? For the strap that I received for review, the leather has a tone that is generally what I would describe as a tawny brown, with darker tones mixed throughout its surface that create a mottled appearance.

The surface of the Vintage Tab has a matte appearance and the edges have a lightly burnished edge. You may notice a few stray leather fibers in the photos; I removed these from the straps edge after the photos were taken.

The Vintage Tan comes with two leather keepers. The keepers are constructed of a single layer of strap leather and are fairly thin in comparison to the strap thickness. One of the keepers is sewn into the strap and the other is floating.

The white stitching on the strap is done by hand and the pattern has an boxed end design at the lug ends. The stitching is nicely applied, with even spacing between stitches as well as spacing from the straps edges.

The lining of the Vintage Tan is constructed from the same material the rest of the strap is made from. There are no branding or other markings on the underside of the strap.

The strap came equipped with a thumbnail style buckle with brushed finish. The buckle has a 24mm width and is attached to the strap with a springbar. With the thickness of the strap, a Pre-Vendome style buckle may have given a better balance to the strap, but the thumbnail is acceptable.

For review purposes, I mounted the strap onto a Panerai Luminor Marina 104. I feel that the strap is a good contrast to the watch's polished finish.

Wrist Shots:

Please note: For reference purposes, the pictures below are taken on a 7.25 inch wrist.

The strap material is rather rigid and needs to be worked in. However, once it is properly formed to your wrist, it is comfortable on the wrist. An interesting thing happens during this process, little cracks and stress marks form which add even more character to the strap. Is this a good thing, I guess it depends on your perspective…to me, yes. For a strap that was created from a beat-up chair, my expectations were for a cool beat-up looking strap…mission accomplished in my mind.

My Thoughts and Impressions:

I feel that the color of the HKTAN Vintage Tan strap is a very unique and attractive. The quality of the craftsmanship of the strap is nice and its texture adds a nice character to the leather. In my opinion, this strap works very nicely with a polished or brushed stainless steel finish.

Thanks for Reading ~ Mark

Nice. For some reason it now seems important for me to know the straps were upcycled from that great old chair. I'm sure a bit of each of the thousands of stories it must have are in each strap. Very cool.

I'm liking this slime green one. Unique to be sure while still relatively subtle. Well done.

Aaron made a hornback gator strap for my PAM183 a few years back.

Amazing CS, Fantstic quality and craftsmanship!

Definitely is an attractive looking strap Mark ! Really is unique too !!! It's funny because we don't often think of where the leather comes from with straps like these. It's awesome really ! Often you would think there is just a bunch of leather pieces that a strap maker has ready to go. However, it seems that it's a lot more difficult than that, and can come from the most unique of places, like this chair. ..Then the magic that's worked to make the strap look much different than the chair did is epic. The color, vintage feel, craftsmanship amaze honestly. Incredibly nice ! Awesome review Mark ! Thanks again !
