so while i was taking a shower this morning (doesn't everybody do their best contemplation in the shower?  ) it occurred to me that i'm one of those far-flung people not in the Triad  . i thought it would be fun to see the towns where people live and what you guys think makes your town special. so let's some some pix!my town, South Berwick, Maine, is in what is referred to as "The Seacoast"- an area roughly from York Beach, ME to Hampton Beach, NH north/south and Portsmouth, NH to Rochester, NH east/west. we are basically a bedroom community to Portsmouth (where i work) but have people commute to Portland and Boston. my town has a very long history dating back to the 1600's. we are home to Berwick Academy, the oldest institution of education in the state (i live a 3 min. walk down the st.). wikipedia link- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Berwick,_Maine Fogg Memorial dome. this is the dome on top of the main bldg on the Academy campus and can be seen for miles up on the hill. it's fantastic at sunset-  Fogg Memorial dome by erik.swenson, on Flickr this old mill is just down the street from my house. it is pretty run down but is housing generators for power-  South Berwick, Maine mill by erik.swenson, on Flickr we have a small ski and snowboard hill with a rope tow in town that is completely dependent on snow from heaven and the volunteers that run it. it gets quite busy when there's snow and it's great to see kids walking in town w/their skis and boards heading toward the hill  the rope tow is powered by a 1938 Ford p/u. more info at http://www.powderhousehill.com/for this shot i used a 10-20mm superwide lens @10mm which has some serious distortion. once that distortion is understood, very interesting effects can be gained  IMG_6757powderhouse by erik.swenson, on Flickr the Sarah Orne Jewett House in the center of town (also @10mm lens. info- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Orne_Jewett_House  IMG_8661sarah orne jewett by erik.swenson, on Flickr the view from inside the York House of Pizza (where i am welcomed like Cliff on "Cheers"  ) IMG_8982pizza house by erik.swenson, on Flickr Hamilton House is another historic site in town and the adjoining Vaughn Woods is a wonderful place to stay cool in the summer months while going for a walk. great spot for snowshoeing, too. a cropped ver. of this was used for the cover of the Nov/Dec 2008 issue "Northern New England Journey," the ME/NH/VT AAA regional magazine. info- http://www.historicnewengland.org/historic-properties/homes/hamilton-house/hamilton-house  IMG_8917vaughn woods by erik.swenson, on Flickr the gardens at Hamilton House (also used in the magazine)  IMG_8687hamilton house garden by erik.swenson, on Flickr the 100+ yr old maple tree in front of our house catches fire every autumn-  our front tree Fall 2007 by erik.swenson, on Flickr thanks for looking!

Erik, nice pictures, love the fall colors. I live in the middle of nowhere Arizona on the side of a mountain known as the Mogollon Rim surrounded by 3 National Forest. I'm 1 hour South by car at 70mph+ from civilization, or 2+ hours North and East at 70mph+ from civilization. Our only 2 claims to fame here is Zane Grey lived here in the 1920-30's, and the Tonto Natural Bridge Oh we also have the Worlds Oldest (126) Continuous Rodeo, never gone, not a rodeo fan. Our tourism website.    I live with the largest strand of Ponderosa Pines in the world, I have the fresh scent of Pine year round, not to mention some of the cleanest air in the Nation. Driving up onto the Rim you can reach elevations in the 8,000ft levels, the views are magnificent, we have an abundance of wildlife such as Antelope, Bear, Deer, Elk, Javalenia, Mountain Lion, Turkey and Brown & Rainbow Trout to name a few. Raleigh, NC One of the fastest growing areas in the country (actually ranked #1 in a lot of places) - http://www.forbes.com/2009/03/30/americans-moving-cities-lifestyle-real-estate-relocating_slide_11.html?thisspeed=25000 Both a growing city and still A LOT of country and an incredibly amount of really good colleges in a small area. Add to that RTP - Research Triangle Park, which is one of the biggest corporate parks in the country, and you have a great area.     Also a ton of culture and music based stuff, new world class museums, etc

Jeff, that's a fantastically beautiful area. i have family in Sedona and spent an entire day wandering around the cinder cone and box canyons in Wupatki Nat'l Monument. i can't wait for the kids to get a little bigger so i can take them out there. i think i could get used to waking up to the smell of Ponderosa pine great shots, thanks for sharing! BTW- i'm a big fan of the New Riders of the Purple Sage (little Zane Grey reference for you )

Well...when we lived in New Orleans...I could have given you hundreds of reasons why I loved living there. But after Katrina, my wife was transfered to the Houston Main Offices of the company where she works. She nor I can give you anything we like about Houston. Only redeeming quality is that Galveston is close by, and it's not really that far from home....about a 5-6 hour drive.

Naw'lins holds a special place in my heart, Larry. i can only imagine how you feel. i proposed to my wife in the courtyard of the French Market Inn (where we had stayed) after we found out Jackson Sq. was used for public executions on the ghost tour we took the nite before i was gonna pop the question

I live the Jersey suburbs, but if you go a few miles in each directions there is a lot of farm land and lakes and woods. Here is a few pics of a preserve not to far from me.
