went to a neighborhood crime watch meeting last month. the guest speaker said to always log off and shut down computer when not in use. the overseas hackers are working around the clock and can get into your computer if its not shut down. i used to put mine in sleep mode, but was told its not safe. this is a major pain to start up and log on every time i want to go on line. what do you say?

Moved to computer section. I believe it has a lot to do with the virus protection software you are using. If you are using something that is constantly running and protecting you, versus something that is only run at a certain time - then you should be protected. I use Kaspersky now and it is always running and protecting my system and network.

I think a lot of the issues has to do with your router security and network passwords. Make sure you use WEP or WEP2 with a sophisticated password. And make sure you have a good firewall and change your router password from default.

I always wonder if im really safe on the computer... While Kaspersky is one of the best unfortunately it isn't the answer. I use the latest Kaspersky Internet Suite which give me full internet and Virus protection but my Hotmail account has been hacked 2 or 3 times. If I do not actually log off of Hotmail while I am on the computer it can and has been hacked. Someone goes into my account and send spam messages to everyone in my address book. This is fairly common and I know it has happened to many. So now it I am on the computer that account is logged off until I am ready to go and check that email. When I am finished I log of again. Fortunately this is the only problem I have run across.

there is only an issue if your compute has already been compromised. the Hotmail hacking is most likely cause by malware/virus issues, not from being logged into Hotmail. if you are not running ANY kind of firewall (i run a s/w and a h/w firewall) you are left open for the whole world to turn your machine into a zombie. you also leave yourself open to being compromised by not locking down your wireless router with WEP and a p/w that can't easily be figured out. putting a PC into sleep mode allows an already compromised PC to be woken up remotely if "wake on LAN" in enabled in the BIOS (which potentially a hacker could do with malicious code).

Good Info! I use the windows firewall along with Kaspersky and i also use WEP protection on my routers.

try running AdAware or some other spyware/malware removal tool every so often. one way of protecting yourself from yourself is to not download "free" games. nothing is free- these games come with the cost of loading up tracking s/w that sends feedback to an internet ad company, or may even contain trojans that will hijack your PC and zombify it. i have run PCs w/o ANY virus s/w for yrs and simply made sure that what i was downloading was legit. ran a McAffee scan on a laptop of mine recently (used 2 yrs w/o virus s/w) and it didn't find a single virus (despite the occasional foray into porn sites ;)

I used to oused Ad Aware and a few other similar programs but stopped when I started using Kaspersky. I will start using AdAware again. THANKS!

No need to shut your computer down, sleep is fine! The most important thing is (especially if you are not the sole user of the computer), to run frequent full system scans. Add to that, the usual "don't open email from people you don't know" stuff. Your hotmail, facebook etc. can still be hacked, if your password isn't complex and long (minimum 8 characters, and use both numbers, symbols, and upper/lower case letters). Then you get to the whole "exploits" area, which bypass that stuff. More security? Have at least 3 "classes" of passwords. One that is only used with online banking email (should be very secure). Then some for facebook and other sites with personal information, the last one for random sites you use.

The biggest risk to your computer is the guy looking at the screen. That pic your college buddy sent you, or the joke your brother sent could just as easily have been sent by the malware they got when they opened a similar email attachment, which then sent itself to everyone in their address book, including you. If you don't talk to someone on the phone, and they say they are sending an attachment, or they email you and tell you to expect an attachment in another mail, never ever open an email attachment. No joke is worth a nasty keylogger that sends everything you do to someone in Russia.

I never shut mine off. My main file server is on 24/7/365. I use a firewall and advanced virus software and I have not had a problem. I make sure my wireless network is locked using the highest level of encryption available. I find it too annoying to reboot and shutdown. I never open an attachment unless I am absolutely sure of where it came from. Some people get mad at me because I trash their e-mails if there are attachments. I've never had a problem.

Whether you shut your PC or not is not really neither the question not the answer. I used Trend Micro for as long as I remember and if I ever got a virus was my fault.Keep yourself far from the questionable Web Frontals, skip porno places and don't open any eMail you don't know who send it. Keep your software up the ladder, maybe you'll have some problmes but it will less than getting a virus. Have a good evening and wonderful festivities.

The other day I was reading a post with a question: why do I need several browsers in my PC. Well, nobody needs tree browser to get into the Web, but if it is necessary, be it! My thoughts are: you need only one for everything in the Web. People should try all three and after choosing delete the rest. I know friends of mine that many problems they have with their PC is related to have more than one browser in their C. This comment is only personal. Have a good evening.

Sometimes you are forced to have 2, if you have Windows 7 64bit. Internet Explorer for Win 64 does not support Flash, and there is no work around. So if you want to browse web sites that use flash, you will need firefox, or chrome. That is the only reason I am aware of a NEED for more than one browser. And if you don't view flash sites no troubles, one browser will do.
