Banane Watch Freek
|
I need help identifying this watch. I found it in a flea market, the battery was out. I had the battery changed and its working fine. It looks to be a promo for the "swarfega" company, but I don`t know if its from the 80`s or 90`s... Also, I was wondering if its rare. I looked all over the internet for any reference, pictures, or ebay auctions and never found anything. Any help would be appreciated. Attachment: IMG_1652.JPG (Downloaded 51 times)

Hi Banane, Welcome to the forum. I do hope you will enjoy yourself here ! Ill tell you what i know of the watch. Forgive me if its not the best of news. Back in the 70's and 80's Lcd watches came on strong due to their accuracy , but on the most part they became popular for their price, and not having to service the watch nearly as often as manual or autowind watches . Japan , and ultimately China started really pumping out LCD watch modules like crazy. And you could buy them in bulk by the hundreds. Since most watch modules at the time tended to be one of a few basic shapes, it lead to a much easier way of making watches. Anyone with a decent set of watch tools could throw one together, and after a few watches, it became so easy, many advertising companies had in house "watch fabricators ".This entailed having the in house printer , print out a sheet of paper with ads , or logos , arranged for by who ever it was wanting the watches made. The sheet of paper would have over 20 logos in pre arranged positions . Then another machine would cut out the logos in the shape of the LCD movement, which became the watches custom advertising dial. The same machine would also cut out the window for the LCD read out. After that , all that needed to be done was putting the movement in the watch , with a battery , and then popping it in some form of case. Some companies, like Burlington Northern Railroad ,bought these watches by the thousands , and gave them to employees for various reasons, like tenure , rewards, or retirement .Some companies used them as a contest gift. And others were handed out as straight advertising. Regretfully , its near impossible to tell exactly who made your watch , and why it was made. There were many companies making near identical LCD movements in those years . Some movements came stamped with a date of manufacture , but when china started making the same movements, that stopped due to numbers involved. I have never seen that logo , or heard of the company before , that is on the watch you have. It may well be a defunct company now. The watch was most likely made in the 1980's , as that was the time that LCD watches became dirt cheap to make. Watches like that in the 1990's werent made for advertising that much anymore due to the advent of cheaper made quartz analog watches that were much more accurate than ever before. { Like Swatch's} The watch , right now, may not be worth much money. Lcd watches are hit or miss like that. The biggest sellers at the moment of LCD watches are Movie tie in LCD watches , like those that were with happy meals . Hot ones now are star wars and the simpsons. But for them to sell well, they need to be mint , in their original box. But in the future, maybe 10 years from now, advertising collectibles from the 80's will be hot ! Its just the way it is. So keep the watch nice. Were it me, if i were keeping it to sell later, i would take the battery out of it, and put it in a safe place. Or , you can certainly enjoy the watch , and use it as you see fit. I dont believe in In the box collections much, I understand the value of such a thing. But i love holding , touching, and using a cool item, not staring at it in a box. Its the advertising value that will go up. That and in 10 to 20 years, that LCD watch will bewilder young kids lol. Enjoy , Rod

Thanks for the history of LCD watches. You all likely found the Wikipedia info on Swarfega as I did...the logo on the watch looks similar to the jar (in attached photo) that the character on the watch is holding... "In 1947, Swarfega was born; it was the first hand cleaner of its type in the world. The name derives from “swarf”, being the old Derbyshire engineering term for oil and grease and “ega”, as in “eager to clean”. As businesses in the late 1940's and early 1950's did not provide proper hand cleaners (only tablet soap), people started using Swarfega after a hard day at work and its popularity quickly grew."
