Which model did you purchase?  :pic

The Eco-Drives last almost forever.  I have several and one is 15+ years old and I've never had it serviced.  It was one of the first watches I got, as a gift from my wife.  It is still in my collection.  I don't wear it much anymore but I still own it and it still keeps great time.

Battery life of watches I think depends on the brands.

The Citizen Eco Drive watches use special rechargeable batteries.
Most of Eco drive watches are equipped with a special titanium lithium ion secondary battery that is charged by an  solar cell located behind the dial.

Maybe you are wondering about short-term battery life. If you don't wear the watch all that often, you do need to keep it in a relatively light environment (above 500lux I think) otherwise your battery will slowly drain. I had put the watch in my office opposite the window side where it is a bit darker (to try it out) and the battery indicator did drop from LV2 to LV1. But re-charging it outside on a sunny day is a piece of cake. Couple of minutes and you're ready to go.

I've got three eco-drives. A couple are around 12 years old and the other is about 15. They are all still running perfectly. I keep my watch box near the window, but I'm not sure that's even necessary.

I have mine on a shelf in my office. The box has a glass lid
It stays charged just by over head light and when I wear it. It also receives the atomic signals very nicely. The battery is solid and the technology on drainage is better on new. Can be left it total dark and it hibernates. Depending on model could go into a shut down and reactivate after 6 months. In my case one radio signal later it is on the second. Best darn watch out there, I wear it more than any other as it turns out. A keeper for sure.

Most of the Eco-Drives I've had to order in replacement batteries for have been over 14-15 year old.

The rechargeable battery/capacitor can cost between AU$16-22 at wholesale (+ tax in Australia), we would generally charge $10+ for labour and another surcharge for pressure test if requested.
It's a VERY small price to pay for another few decades of keeping time.

Thanks, I didn't realize you're in OZ. I'll have to do some math and figure out what that would cost in the USA.

I store mine in a small clear plastic case, in a sunny location is that OK for them?

That should be perfectly fine, if not ideal! Sun gives it the best charge (better than artificial light).
Expect to be paying around US$50 if you took it somewhere or sent it to Citizen as that is their RRP for it.

Citizen Eco Drive watches are  solar-powered watch doesn't need a battery; it stores energy which it gets from the sun. Many Citizen eco-drive watches also have  feature like  atomic timekeeping, which means you never have to set the time and worry about your Citizen's watch accuracy.

So I've got this Titanium Solar Tech 180. #'s on case back are 7875-HO4945, 870314 and GN-4W-UL.
My wife gave it to me for Christmas sometime in the 90's best I can remember.
It hasn't worked for some time now,a couple years. I can put a battery in a beater watch, but don't want to screw this up.
Should I try to do this myself or get a pro to look at it? I see that there is a big difference between a regular battery and
the rechargeable li-ion capacitor. Probably answered my own question but what y'all say?

Took a pix on my iPhone but have no idea how to insert into this post.  :pic????
