History/About (Direct from website): "Forged as a tribute to the bond between a son and his father, Égard seeks to produce exceptional timepieces that do more than simply tell time—they capture moments.

Égard debuted in 2012 with an intricate layered-dial design that makes a bold statement while exuding prestige. Our pieces are unique expressions of style, built with the highest quality movements produced in Switzerland and Japan. We strive to design luxury pieces that are truly worthy of life’s milestones, while still providing top-of-the-line materials and motion.

Father and son founders, Peter and Ilan Srulovicz work together in their Los Angeles and Toronto offices to design and manufacture all of Égard’s pieces providing real craftsman quality with luxury appeal.

“Though we ask not to be bound nor gripped by the hand of time, we seek to measure it—not so that we may control it or defeat it, but rather, so that we may expose ourselves to its infinite scale."

Life is a series of moments. Many of those moments define us as individuals. Often, when we look back, those defining moments include someone else, someone who stood by our side—when it was easy and when it was hard. Égard began as a tribute to that person and to those moments.

In our story, that person is a father, Peter Srulovicz. His son, Ilan, designed his first timepiece to honor the years of support and the ageless bond they have shared. It was his goal to create pieces that inspire, embodying the depth of emotion we all feel for that person in our lives.

Being a true designer, Ilan researched the inner workings of watches and the watch industry thoroughly, adopting only the finest technical specifications and materials. He found inspiration in his memories and sense of style, building his designs as 3D renderings. With his designs receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews, those renderings became prototypes, which became finished products. Thus, Égard came into being.

Though time is fleeting, each carefully crafted Égard timepiece becomes a constant reminder to accept those passing moments, being thankful for the great ones and looking forward to the next ones. At its core, Égard is a son’s way of thanking his father, turning time into a timeless legacy.

Stock Photo:

Packaging: The Shade is packaged very nicely. The packaging consists of an outer black cardboard box. Inside the outer box is a Piano black finished jewelry case that is very well padded providing adequate protection for the watch. The packaging also includes a large polishing cloth. Both the jewelry case and cloth are signed with the company name. I would compare the packaging to the size and quality of some of the nicer pieces from Glycine as well as Anonimo. Very well done by ÉGARD.

Case (Crown Side): The entire case is completed in a high polished finish fitting for such a timepiece. The case measures 43mm and 46.5mm including crown. The crown is gear shaped and measures a substantial 7mm. The crown is the screw down variety which I prefer regardless of watch style. There is no play in the crown, however, when engaging the crown it is somewhat stiff and coarse.

The crown is signed with the company swords logo. Why swords as a logo? According to the owner ÉGARD, the company was started for his father. The swords represent an interpretation of the bond he has with his dad. Firstly the swords crossing represent mutual respect between a father and son. His father grew up doing martial arts and brought him up into it as well. He has been doing martial arts over 20 years and teaches as well. Lastly swords represent precision. Anyone who has ever used one knows that there is no margin for error. Swords and bladed weapons are ones that demand attention to detail not only for the maker but wielder representing the passion and attention to detail he puts into the timepieces.

Case (Non-Crown): The non crown side of the case is engraved with the company name is quite large font. I am not a huge fan of company names being engraved on cases but that is just a personal preference. I would have much preferred the company logo no more engraved on any case.

The case measures in at almost 16mm thick providing quite substantial wrist presence. Lug to lug the Shade measures 49mm and also measures 22mm in regards to lug spacing. Other than the engraved company name on the side of the case I find the Shade case to be quite stunning and well made. The lug design is quite unique as well almost providing a square type fit and feel to the case.

Crystal, Dial and Hands: The sapphire crystal dial opening measures in at around 37mm. Beneath the AR coated sapphire crystal is what I consider the best feature of the Shade, the dial. The dial on the Shade may be one of the most stunning artistic dials I have personally inspected.

The dial is multi-layer consisting of at least 2 layers utilizing arc design patterns.  The inner portion of the dial appears matte black in finish at first glance until exposed to direct sunlight which shows off a more glossy nature.  The inner portion of the dial is also ribbed to provide some more texture to the design.  What is interesting when sunlight strikes the inner portion of the dial besides the glossy nature the ribbing has a sparkling property making the inner portion pop even further.  The outer portion of the dial is matte black in finish with the ÉGARD name as well as the Automatic designation for the movement encased noted. This portion also contains a powder blue color in the arc from 12 to 2 to provide some additional color to the dial.

The Shade has applied high polished markers surrounding the dial.  What makes the markers different is that ÉGARD uses both standard hash markers as well as Roman Numerals from 10 to 2 on the dial.  The arc design pattern of the dial has also been cut below center dial and above the 6 position to allow for movement viewing through what is called an open heart which is quite appropriate for this style of watch.

The watch has powder blue classic sword style hour and minutes hands installed with matching color second hand.  The color of the hands correspond to blue accents along the arc of the outer portion of the dial from 12 -2.  There is no lume on the hands or the dial.  ÉGARD really did a nice job on the dial using multiple finishes, marker combos and color creating a very striking appearance.  The dial itself makes this model worth the price of admission.

When a little extra sunlight hits the dial.....

On the Wrist:

Case Back and Movement: The case back has basic specification information such as water resistance, company name, and sapphire crystal. The Shade also has a sapphire crystal installed for movement viewing. The Shade comes with the Miyota 8N24 automatic movement. Based on my research this movement is simply a skeletonized version of the 8215. The one nice feature of this 8N24 is that ÉGARD has customized the rotor with the company name which looks fantastic.

The movement has been keeping great time since arrival on the wrist and surprising even on the winder for extended periods of time.  The choice of movement is not bad but I would love to see some sort of skeletonized ETA automatic utilized in future productions even if it means the pricing goes up slightly.

Straps: The Shade comes standard with two 22/20mm straps one black and one brown that measure in at 3.5mm thick. The brown strap comes with a high polished standard buckle attached while the black strap attached to the watch has a dual deployant clasp attached. The dual deployant clasp is high polished to match the watch case and is signed with the company logo.  The straps are extremely soft and comfortable to wear.  At this price point I would like to see the black leather with deployant along with a bracelet standard rather than two leather straps.

Lume: None. Nothing to report as lume on this particular style watch is completely unnecessary. I wouldn't be disappointed if ÉGARD researched the possibility of using C1 Superluminova or some sort of lume compound at least on the hands for future releases.

Summary: I would like to commend ÉGARD for the SHADE. As the consumer you get a unique case design, screw down crown, sapphire crystal, striking dial and a beautiful skeletonized movement culminating in a classy artistic looking dress watch.

While the Shade is a fantastic watch there is still some room for improvement as with any on the market. I would like to see smoother crown operation and I would also suggest a bracelet and one strap as standard accessories.  While lume is completely unnecessary for this style watch, I would still suggest some research for possibly considering lumed hands on future productions.

Thanks for reading and as always I look forward to your comments.

Great review Mike.
Though I am not sure how often I would wear it, it is a cool looking watch that would be great for when going out on the town, or other dressy occasions. Really like the dial work on it.
Looking forward to video.

Thanks for the review, Mike! Nice watch!

I do not have a problem with the no-bracelet option, it seems that its a dress watch, and so no bracelet is needed.

However, I'd prefer to see the bridge across the face to have some sort of pattern/finish/pop, and the name of the watch and "automatic" writing to be less obtrusive. Not a watch I would buy, as I have my dress watch and am fully satisfied, but interesting nonetheless!

Rob

Good review !
Interesting watch. It seems like a good one. The watch is very dressy for it being as robust as it is with 200 meter WR and a Miyota auto in it. The Miyotas are hard to kill.
I agree, its a shame that it has no lume at all . If i received the watch i would immediately either fill the hands with lume, or powder coat the hands in lume and seal them , to keep their shape.

I honestly don't see the need for lume. I wouldn't like the look of the hands if they had lume. It's not a sport or dive watch. I just don't see it needing lume at all.

Rod, re-reading your comments, if they had coated the hands in lume.. Keeping the same design, that would have been cool.

Not my cup of tea, I wouldn't own one but I give them points for being original and the dial has depth and design cues that race interesting. I am not a fan of the hands. Bt it's nice to see something different.
Thanks for the great review.
