I have not been to the US in 8 years.  In 2004 my friend in LA was still in Cal Tech (he joined evil corporate America) and my wife and I were en route to holiday in a country that had no official relationship with the US.

I am spending three days in LA on work in late August and there is this new thing you have to do beforehand - the Electronic System for Travel Authorization.  I am now charged $14 to electronically process information that I previously wrote on a green card at the airport for free!  What gives?  Most other countries still get you to write stuff down!

Anyway I am sure I will be greeted with the same warmth and kindness as I experienced at LAX the last time I was there.

So my friend, are you too on your way here to join our evil corporate America aka The Dark Side? "Those ARE the Droids you are looking for". Hope your trip goes smooth and you enjoy this wonderful country of ours. There are still a few of us that are still proud of her.

Sorry Machinehead. I empathize. Its a shame we are so cheap we arent proud enough to be engratiating. Its all about the buck these days. Seems even our enforcement is designed to put money in a company's pockets.

I wish you a memorable visit, in a good way of course. :)

When I lived in Hawaii, I met people vacationing from all around the world, and you Aussies were the most friendly, down to earth people I ever met there. It was a pleasure getting to know you guys and gals.

I just hope I get a chance to visit your great country some day.

Thanks guys! It's a flying visit to UCLA to look at some dementia research. I only wished I was smart enough to join evil corporate America!

Don't get me wrong, once I am in the States I love the place, though I have only been to the North West, California, Minnesota, Illinois, New England, NY and DC so it may be a skewed view.

Thanks tinknocker for the compliment, though there are some unfriendly types too!

Welcome to the USA

I hope you have a great visit. I someday hope to visit the land down under. I hope we treat you with the same hospitality as I would expect from the Aussies. Travel has changed since 911 and that is just the way it is. If the inconvenience for some more safety is $14 then I'm all for it. Again, have a great trip!
