I bought this Orient Bambino a few days ago and am impressed with it; I am enjoying wearing it at work, it is a nice reliable and affordable dress watch. So I thought I’d write a quick review of it and share with my fellow WIS. I haven’t had a basic dress watch in the collection in a while, and it’s nice to have at least one for special days at the office, something classic, simple and thin that easily slides under the cuff and doesn’t attract attention.

I’ve had several before but never felt like spending a lot of $ on one, and I don’t wear them often enough as my default for work is a dress diver instead (I.e. PO, SMP2254, Tag AR500…) But some days call for a dress watch so I wanted to find a nice one but affordable, had to be automatic, white or silver dial, simple clean design,  about 40mm and thin. Enters the Orient Bambino, checks all the boxes and Orient is a known value as I’ve owned several and they are fairly popular.

The Bambino is the right size (40.5mm, 11.8mm thick), the dial the right color and clean, and the indices are classic that are a good match for the dauphine hands. I like the date window, with the black frame and  black # on white background.  The watch comes in several variations including gold or silver case/hands/indices, black or white dial… This is the version I prefer, most subtle and classiest in my opinion. It works better for me at the office when wearing a suit and tie. I have never liked gold watches and black dialed dress watches either. I am not familiar with the mvt, the non hacking Orient caliber 48743,but I suspect it’ll be just fine form a reliability perspective, the second hand sweeps very smoothly, 40hr PR is more than acceptable… all given the low price of the watch. The watch is WR to 30m.

The list price is $260 but Orient almost always has 30% coupons, though I miss the old days of the 50% off J The dial is very pleasing to look at and looks as though it is domed due to the crystal being domed mostly towards the outer edge, but flat towards the center. It is very legible. The crocalook dark brown leather strap goes well with the watch, it is not high end of course as one would expect at this price point but it certainly is not crap either and it does the job just fine. Note the buckle is stamped “Orient” in the front.

The dome crystal, dial, hands give the watch a retro feel I like very much. The watch is thin, light and sits flat on the wrist, it is easy to forget it’s there on my wrist as opposed to the divers I usually wear. The watch is almost all dial, has very short and thin lugs so it wears large for its size I think. The watch is a no brainer for me, affordable, clean retro looks and comfortable, plus I feel comfortable with the brand. I like it! But to be honest, I have owned other dress watches that were fine but never kept one longer than a couple of months.. so we’ll see if this one hangs around a while…  :whatever: just something with me and dress watches .. ahem…

Well here are a few quick pics I took this morning.

Cheers

Brice

Nice review and pics, I like the look of this one, and if I needed a dress watch, would consider it.

Enjoyed your review, Brice. I think I'm going to get one of these. I had just about decided on the gold-tone, black dial, but I like your pictures and now I'm not so sure (what I like to call "real" pictures always give you a better idea of how the watch will work for you than the catalouge pictures from the manufacturer). I agree that Orient is a great value. I have a couple of theirs and they're a lot for a little money. Anyway, good review!

I'm kinda rooting for this one to hang around more that a couple months. It's a sharp watch and looks good on your wrist.

Nice review and the pics definitely pop more than the orient usa website.

Thank you for this one,

Todd

Looks good. Might just be my next watch purchase. I started to wear dress shirts instead of polo shirts and the Orient Ray is a bit thick to flick my arm and expose the watch. How do you like the leather strap? My Citizen dress watch is a bit uncomfortable compared to the stainless steel bracelets that I am used to.
