What kind of maintenance should I expect for how often and for about how much? A friend of mine just took his Rolex in for service and paid $300 for a new main spring but no pressure test. All I can say is WOW. I don't want to pay that much on a $200 watch.

Others may think differently, but essentially, if I buy a watch for one or two hundred dollars, then I certainly don't ever intend to get it serviced or repaired.  Basically, it's a disposable watch.  The great thing is, that could be years and years.  When it comes down to it, though, if you can replace it cheaper than you can fix it, then that's what you do.  I have two watches right now that I figure I might eventually get serviced if something goes wrong with them.  The rest of my collection, I might mourn the loss, but I wouldn't pay to fix.

I'd say your friend got off cheap. Servicing rolexes is expensive!

I would echo Darren's statements, but I am one who rarely throws things away. I have camping and fishing equipment that I still use and purchased in the early 80's.

Anyway, think of it this way, the watch was purchased cheap, so the parts are cheaper, relatively speaking. If you ever need service, likely it won't be near as bad.

I would like to amend that statement above, it wont be near as bad as a Rolex. However, remember that servicing it in the USA, you arent going to find a watchmaker to do the work for less than $100, simply because we have a much higher income level in the US compared with the average Chinese worker. So it will cost a few, and likely more than the watch, but not as much as the rolex.

service intervals on Swiss watches tend to be more frequent than Asian watches. i can't speak for Orient, as i have no experience with them, but i have my father's 1967 Seiko and it's never been serviced. runs great, too

oh, and you should expect chicks to throw themselves at you when you wear that

I have an Orient that is 30 years old, runs to within 12 seconds a day and has never been serviced.
Orient are on a par with Seiko.

Depends on the watch if you choose to service it or not. Generally a $200 watch you won't service because its cheaper to replace. You will also have most parts readily available for a $200 watch.Rolex parts are expensive because you can't substitute generic parts and you have to go thru a certified Rolex repair shop.

Orient is owned by Seiko. Both Seiko and Orient make auto movements that are nearly bullet proof. I've got examples of both that are 20 plus years old...never been serviced, and are still dead on accurate

I agree with all that has been said. I have several Orients now, mostly from the seventies all are working perfectly. If by chance one of those early watches needed repair and I was very keen on the watch, I would try and get a replacement movement by putting a request on say ebay for anyone who has a movement for sale.
