thanks for the reply,

yes when i saw it i thought it was beautiful, i know the lion means sterling silver, unsure as to what the coat of arms means?

and would you say that was an N stamp which would date it between 1928 and 1808 according to google as theres 3 different N's which look similar

any thoughts on this

The "JJ" on the bottom of the caseback seems to be for James Jackson & Son.

You can check it here. Go down the page till you see the JJ symbols and match it up with yours.

http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/London-JE-JK.html#JJ

Is your case silver? They look like silver hallmarks.

You can go here, down to London and you'll see the Lyons head that is left of the "N"

http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/index.htm

I've seen the full lion marker before.

I the watch is gold, I'm not sure if the hallmarks will be the same.
Some should, but I'm no expert.

If I find other relevant sites I'll post them.

I think the "n" is the date, when it was made.

Okee doke,
Your watch movement is very old {1810-1860 , likely around 1850 due to engraving style}.
Your watch has a swiss Ebauche movement .{the movement was made, or mostly made ,as movement only sale. and then a private jeweler /watch maker finished the watch}
The type of movement is fairly common for the 1850s. It is a ebauche style movement , hand engraved, with verge , chain driven fusee, and is under sprung. You can see that it is under sprung by looking at the balance, and the regulator rule is UNDER the balance wheel. With out taking the movement apart, i cant do much better than that . As the signature on the movement is someone i dont know of. Under the watch dial there will be further numbers and stamps that will tell more about the movement.

The watch case itself was made in England in 1868 , as denoted by the stamped gothic "n". The case is made of silver , but lower grade than sterling , as denoted by the lion with the curled tail stamp. It was assayed by the english government for its silver weight , as denoted by the shield shaped stamp that has a lions face in it {hard to see}. The JJ is indeed the case makers stamp.
The watch , if the movements mechanicals are in good repairable condition , may be worth some money. If it was working , in that condition, the watch could be worth a touch under 1000 dollars. Fusee driven watches are getting more rare daily , as there are fewer and fewer people who know how to repair or make such things anymore.

Rod,

thank you very much for the reply, i was very impressed with what you found out, i can't believe the watch is 160 years old :).

I've tried to wind the watch but when i let go of the key it springs back to where i started from,

obviously I'm a complete movie to these things, am i doing something wrong or is the watch in need of repair?

Thanks a lot again

Ste

Ive heard great things about Motorcity watch works, though have never used them. I do most of my own watch work, except for stuff that calls for specialized tools . when i need that kind of work , i go to a Master watch maker in my area that i know of.
