Hello to the group..    I have become the keeper of an old watch.. This was my wife's mothers Great Grandfathers watch ( and my mother in law is in late 60's).   I can't find any name on this watch,, I havent opened it up at all except for the cover over the watch face.   Any helpful information with how I can find out more on the watch will be helpful

On the front watch face cover,, looks like there was a crest of some sort at one time, its very worn

Opened up, the inside is in very nice shape

Another View

Keys

Imprint on inside of face

Close up

Thanks... Rob.

I think you might have to crack the case on this to figure it out.

These key wound pieces can be quite old.

I'll have to study the case a bit more before I attempt to open it.. I'm thinking i'm just missing something obvious to open it.

Find a watch guy that is familiar with pocket watches.

He'll know how to open it.

Don't wreck something that might be valuable.

There's some links here where you can do some searching.
Is this an American made watch? or Swiss, German, etc

Just a guess but the H.B. on the inside cover would they be a makers hallmarks ? If they are you could look them up , where I'm not sure but I bet google could help . Good luck and nice watch

Hey 1stiski,
I agree with the others. You cant go by the case to have a clue whats going on inside. Even the watch dial can be made by someone else, and no help what so ever identifying the watch.
Its not hard to open a watch case up. I have the feeling your watch is a touch older than 1850 though. That said, you will probably have to use a case knife and pry it open. Doing it gently and slowly will minimize the danger of any damage.
Use you eyes , and a magnifier of some sort, and scan the rim around the back of the watch. You WILL find the area where others have pried open your pocket watch. A watch that old has been opened hundreds of times i am sure for basic servicing .
Once you open the watch be VERY careful to remove the back slowly , as dirt and grime can fall off the edges of the case back, into the movement ! But do not be afraid to look under the hood, this is a must in collecting ! Just be careful.
Take some pics of the movement from different angles . Even the movement may be essentially unmarked. You may have to identify the movement by its type and construction.
Just a guess from the pictures . Id say it was made in the early 1800s { maybe 1830 ish} it looks to be a sterile faced porcelain dial, very common for ebauche movements made by the swiss and french for export. The watch looks European . I wouldnt be surprised if it were a key wind and set swiss bar movement. 1-7 jewel.
Please post more when you get more pics !
Rod

Beautiful details under that lid:

The inner workings...

Written on the workings: Independent Watch Co., FREDONIA, NY.. with the numbers:  121476

Close up of the movement,,, Very cool

THE Key wind:

Time adjustment:

SO whats the verdict on this watch.

Wow! That is very cool. They were only in business for 6 years. Could mean that they are rare and expensive.

Is that the "Mark Twain" you have? By the description it sounds like it. I would definitely have it appraised.

Very nice,

It's fun searching for the info and actually finding it, isn't it?
