I'm wearing my G-Shock GW7900B-1 today and I noticed that whenever I rotate the watch toward myself it illuminates by itself. I've included a horrible quality video I made to help show you, but as you can see I'm not pressing the light button. I don't have the instructions here with me but when I read them I don't remember reading anything about this. Is this a feature of the watch that can be adjusted or is this abnormal and not supposed to happen?

I have seen this auto illuminate feature on a couple of G-shocks. Not sure if you can turn it off or not. I would imagine the gshock guys will chime in. Seems that would really drain the battery.

I believe that it can be turned off. One of mine has the feature and I think that I recall turning it on...

Yeap it's a neat little feature and one of my fave on some of the G-Shock that they call AEL, or A-EL. You press on the light button for several seconds holding it down (5?) to turn it off and on.

Try this: Hold the illuminate/light button down for 2-3 seconds until the watch beeps. The same thing turns it on.

It's a feature. Just press and hold the light button until the little tick mark above the "A.EL" text goes away. Vice Versa you can turn it back on by pressing and holding the light button again until the little tick mark above the "A.EL" text appears. A.EL stands for "Auto Electro Luminescence". eh...you both beat me to it Last edited on Tue Jan 31st, 2012 07:46 pm by zaskar36 |

That worked, thank you three for your help. It is a neat feature and I may turn it back on. Don, I'm not sure how much effect it would have on the battery since it's solar rechargable. I wouldn't want this feature on a watch that had a regular quartz movement though. Again thanks everyone for the quick help.

I always found this feature distracting while I was driving at night. I always turn this off.

If Casio came up with some type of tech besides motion and angle sensing so the back light would only come on when you wanted to tell the time, that would be EXTREMELY useful. I doubt it's possible...but man that would be something.

It is also available on some other non G-Shock Casios. I have it on the WS300-1EV Ana-Digi Illuminator watch. Currently about $26 on Amazon.
