I bought this watch on New Years Eve 1994. It was my first "expensive" watch and I wore it 24/7. Did matter what I was wearing - the watch was on my wrist. I think the battery was changed once. The leather band eventually disintegrated and I put the watch in a plastic bag with the warranty card and manual and put in my nightstand.

A month ago I unearthed it and brought it to Zales for a battery and a new crystal. They said they would send it to Movado and call me with an estimate. The estimate finally came in at $440. They said it needs a new movement and I'm guessing the battery leaked.

The watch does have some meaning, but $440 on a watch I paid maybe $300 for? If I am going to drop $440, I'd rather buy a new automatic.

Do I have any other options? Any chance I can find an old Movado with the same quartz movement and swap it? Thoughts?

search the net and buy a new movement.

Bring it to a watch repairer, not Zales, and ask him how much to change it out.

swapping out a quartz mov't isn't that difficult and i can't imagine the mov't itself costing more than $50-60 max. i think if you were quoted $100 that would have been reasonable, but i'd get that watch head back from Zales and say "thanks, but no"

keep in mind- Movado charges a high premium to repair their watches, and then Zales needs their cut for spending the 5 mins with you taking your info :whatever:

check around for a local watchmaker to do an estimate. my guess- it'll be closer to the $100 mark.

I had a sector diver and the mvt died.
I took to the little hole in the wall watch guy at the mall and put in a new mvt for 60$.

My wife has an old movado (museum) watch that needed a new movt... Had a watchmaker install a Rhonda quartz movt for $65.00   No way I'd pay $400 for new quartz movt unless it was a Brietling Aerospace or similar...

I will. It's worth noting that I asked for a sapphire crystal, but still. Once I get the watch back in working order and on a new leather strap, I will post pictures.

Thanks for all the advice!

Take it local.

Update - took it local and once a new battery was in it, it started running. He is going to keep it a few days, replace the crystal, and make sure it keeps time. Not sure why I was told I needed a new movement.

Ed, they probably told you that so you'd consider buying a new watch from them, as they make commission off the sales of new pieces. I've never been a fan of Zales, as they did something similar to my fiancee about a month after we started dating. The simple fact that it's running after putting a new battery in tells me that Zales didn't even bother to crack her open and look. Those thieving bastards only care for the money!

Well, the watch went back to Movado - that much I know because I saw the documentation when I picked up the watch. My guess is they recommended a new movement, but Zales told me I NEEDED a new movement. In the end, who knows. I am just glad I can add this back to my rotation. It's a nice dress watch and not your typical museum dial Movado.

I had a Movado movement replaced, too.

It shouldn't cost more than $150.

Find a decent watch maker to do it.

It just might take a while until he can find the correct movement.

It might be over $400 for Movado to do it. But it is just a movement swap.

Did the $400 include the crystal replacement?

Yes. $440 was to replace the movement and a new sapphire crystal.

Glad it worked out. It's a nice looking watch. I love the Roman numeral indeces. I've never liked the one dot at 12 o'clock on a solid black dial trademark thing they do, but I like that simple layout. Got it on a new strap yet?

The high price to replace both is probably in line for sending it back to Movado.

I'd check around and see if a local guy could do it cheaper. I don't see a problem with the movement, the crystal might be another story though.
