Time Traveler Rob. Sorry for the typos!
|
Review, Orient Mako, Yellow Dial Back in early December 2011, I had decided I needed (yes, it’s an addiction, so I “needed”) a yellow dial watch. I thought it would be great for blue outfits. At the same time I was noticing several posts on Makos, particularly James’ post that he found the Mako XL to be fitting to wear for a week straight, and Andrema’s post, a few weeks later, of his yellow Mako on a black nylon strap with a yellow accent stripe. The watch looked marvelous! A real great watch for blue jeans. So, I new I had to get this watch sometime. However, at the same time, I was on the track of another, quite expensive, watch, and with Christmas and all, I decided to wait for a while. Well, after new year’s, I noticed that the Christmas thread for Orient watches at 50% off was still active. I checked the last few posts of the thread and learned of the post-Christmas code “orientjapan50”, which was then active. I felt that this was all a message from the gods that it was time to act. So, I placed my purchase. I ordered it on the 6th of January (a Friday), it was processed and mailed on the 9th, and arrived at my home on the 13th. Overall, I would say the time frame was quite acceptable. Note: below there are a great many pictures which also are featured with the Deep Blue Alpha Marine 500 (an excellent watch) because I felt it was a watch many are familiar with, and to provide a size perspective. If you don’t know the DB AM 500 size, and would like to have a distinct watch to compare it to, feel free to PM and perhaps we can find a mutually-agreed upon comparison for a few pictures. Here are the specifications: Make and Model: CEM65001Y - Orient Mako Men / Women:Men Power Reserve:Approximately 40 hours Crystal:Mineral Movement:Orient Caliber 46943 Clasp:Fold-over with Double Push Button Safety Crown:Screwed-down Water Resistance:200m Case Material:Stainless Steel Case Diameter:41mm Case Thickness:13mm Dial Color:Yellow Bezel Material:Stainless Steel Bezel Function:Unidirectional Calendar:Day/Date Band Material:Stainless Steel Band Length:22mm Warranty Type:1 Year Orient Watch USA Warranty Box and Contents The Mako comes in a heavy paper, or maybe paper-wrapped-metal, box, with a metal-exposed top, dressed with the paper by way of stitching and rivets in the corners. The top of the exposed metal has the Orient logo printed on it in black. ![]() When you open the box, you find a satin-like material covering the inside the box and pillow, with the Mako on the pillow, and attached to a plastic piece with the Orient logo. In addition, the Orient logo is again present on the top inside of the box. Also, under the pillow, you find a the instruction manual (grey), an International Guarantee booklet (off white), and a nylon lanyard with the Orient logo on it, in white (not well shown, below). The following pictures, from top to bottom demonstrate (i) the booklets and open box, and a glimpse of the lanyard off to the top left; (ii) a further closeup of the watch in the open box; and (iii) a dial closeup, from within the box. ![]() ![]() ![]() Dial: The dial is yellow, as has been noted, and contains lumed hour and minute hands with metal edges, and the minute hand is metal with a red tip, forming the overall shape of an arrow. The dial has lumed numbers at 6, 9, and 12, while the date and day window occupy the position at 3. The other five-minute markers (I.e., 1, 2, 4, 5, etc.) are marked with lumed marks in the form of straight lines. The day and date (left and right at the 3 hour mark) are clear and large enough to read without any problems whatsoever. Very well thought out. The Orient logo occupies the dial position just below the 12 hour mark, with “Automatic”written in cursive just below it. Above 6 are the words “Water Resist” in cursive, with “200m” written just underneath. To either side of the base of the 6 hour mark are the writing “JAPAN MOV’T” (left of 6) and “EM65-400-R T” (right of 6). (NOTE: these letters are very small, and even under magnification, it was hard to read the writing to the right of 6.) The internal sides of the dial form a pan, which is also yellow, and marked with dark slashes at the 5 minute marks, while lighter slashes occupy each of the single-minute marks. Overall, I find the dial very pleasing. Here is some very close dial shots (I broke out a real camera for this, so it is good for a change!): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bezel: The bezel is metal with a black insert, containing a lumed dot on a triangular pip, numbers at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minutes, with large markers at the 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, and 55 minutes, and small markers at 1-4 and 6-9 minutes, like a standard divers bezel. The bezel has a coin edge to it. I would note here that the bezel is really stiff, and difficult to move around the dial, which is not the sort of thing that a diver would want, but it does help the obsessive-compulsive who MUST have his/her pip at 12 o’clock! (Also, it probably won’t be used as a dive watch anyway, because although rated at 200m depth, Orient does not recommend using this watch when SCUBA diving, but only for regular swimming.) Here is a shot of the bezel edge, because the bezel itself is well-seen through the closeups above: ![]() Bracelet and Clasp The bracelet appears to be solid metal, with brushed front and back, and polished edges. The end links joining the case are folded metal (being sprung to the case by way of spring bars), and the whole thing gives the impression that it is tough, and will not let you down. The removable links are held by way of the standard fork pins, made from folding over the metal, and were easily adjusted to fit me. The clasp is a standard folding clasp, with a two-prong lock to it, as well as a fold-over buckle. The back of the clasp has the Orient logo embossed into it, and containing three micro-adjustment points for the bracelet. I have to say, it is a quality clasp, with an excellent lock/release, and solid feel to it; however, there are no half-links (I have lucked out and got a great fit anyway). Here are a few pictures: Clasp, locked and showing the Orient logo, along with the outside of the bracelet, demonstrating the brushed metal: ![]() Here is the edge of the bracelet, which is polished: ![]() Case: The case is brushed steel on top, and polished on the sides. The case back has a domed screw-in, with the orient logo on the back center, and “Automatic“ in cursive below it. Surrounding the logo/words, are, in a circle: “WATER RESISTANT 200M”, “STAINLESS STEEL”, AND “ORIENT WATCH CO. LTD”. Outside the “ORIENT WATCH CO. LTD” are, in order “KY” in a small box; EM65-CO-A CA L8”. Sorry, no pictures, as I didn’t want to open my bracelet again at this time. Maybe I will add some later. Operation (I.e., setting the watch) The Mako is, first and most importantly, non-hacking. This means all you exact time fans out there, who want your time dead set on an atomic clock link (me included here), you will be disappointed a little here. But, then again, how much can you expect for so little cash? In addition, the Mako is not hand-wind-able, meaning you have to shake it to get the spring to wind up and get the watch going. Luckily, it starts pretty quickly after a few shakes. Again, for this price, you cannot have everything (though I am disappointed again). The crown at the 2 o’clock position is a push button, screwed-down sleeve, crown, and pushing the button operates the days of the week, alternately English and Espanole. The crown at the 3 o’clock position, is the familiar classic screw-down crown, which operates the date at position 1 (one click out after unscrewing the crown) and operates the time at position 2 (two clicks out after unscrewing the crown). The operation for each feature is smooth, but it should be noted that when setting the day, you must set it for the Espanole day for the previous day, because when you screw it down, in the process, unless you are more dexterous than I, you will also flip the day one stop. (Similar reasoning for Espanole, but set to the same day in English so the screw down will flip to Espanole.) Here are pictures of the crowns in (upper) and out (lower): ![]() ![]() Case: The case is brushed steel on top, and polished on the sides. Overall Wear The Mako is a slim watch, with a good dial size. The watch is perfect for wearing under dress wear, as well as casually. Here is a picture on my wrist which is 6.75” at this time (upper); and ;three comparison shots with Deep Blue Alpha Marine 500, for comparison: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition, the lume, while nothing to shout about, is solidly there, as can be seen in this photo: ![]() Performance: I have noticed the performance of the Mako is no where near what I get of my other watches (7750, 2824-2, SW200, Myota 9015, etc.), and tends to be more than 30 seconds a day. However, this is not such a big deal to begin with, because you cannot set it perfectly anyway, and its an automatic below $200, so what can you expect? Conclusions and Synopsis: The Orient Mako is a great watch for the price it can be had. I received this watch at my door for $107 US, after the coupon code. The watch, with these features, and being automatic, I would think of being worth about $150 to $175 US, probably to the lower end for the lack of hacking and lack of manual winding (I prefer control and exactness). However, still, as can be seen, I feel I got more watch than I paid for! Orient did a great job with this watch! Cons: Lack of hacking. Lack of manual winding. Folded End Links. Lack of half-links. Bezel too tight. Non-functional Diver (not recommended for diving). Pros: Value. Solid bracelet. Excellent clasp. Looks. (Really, it is hard to state the pros. Basically, if it is not complained about, it is likely a pro, within reason.) Would I recommend this to a person looking for an automatic watch? Yes, if they wish to obtain good value at a lower price point. Would I buy the watch again? Yes definitely, its very good looking. I hope, if you are considering this watch, that my review has helped you some to finalize your decision. I am pleasantly surprised by this Mako, and do believe there will be more Orient watches in my future. Last edited on Wed Jan 18th, 2012 02:06 am by Time Traveler ____________________ Carpe Diem! |

Great review Rob! I don't know about it being 'quick and dirty' seems pretty comprehensive to me! Great pictures also. I have always liked this model (as well as the XL). Having read your review I'm almost certain I'm going to try one of these in the near future. Yellow dial is great, really pops. Are you going to keep this on the bracelet or try a Nato?

Nice review! The DB Alpha Marine really dwarfs it though... Always like those Makos!

Already placed an order to strapped for time. Purchased the black strap with the yellow sripe. Andrema's pic sold me on that, it will go great with blue jeans! Rob

Love the review but for the record that is not a mako xl... And it is not the 44.5/45mm version of the mako. It's actually smaller. I just bought the same yellow mako... And a mako xl lume dial. There is a posted topic not too far down on the mako xl lume dial.. very big difference in size and style.

Ok... Wasn't sure if everyone knew and if you did. Also just in case someone unfamiliar with the orient brand or new to collecting came across and accidentally purchased thinking it was xl (yellow mako actually 42mm not 44.5mm as written in description above)....they'd be in for a surprise. Lol. You know some people don't read everything in the descriptions for themselves... then come back here and blame you.. lol. Just looking out for the noobs and my fellow horologists. Anyhow it is a nice piece. I was worried it would be too small for me since I'm a big guy but it fits nice. Got a pic in the post beneath yours. These 2 pieces the yellow mako and mako xl lume dial make me wish I would have returned my invicta..subaqua noma 3 but its too late now. Can someone say... "addict"? Lol.
