How Watch Was Obtained: Watch was donated for review.

Company Info - from the company website:  http://orientwatchusa.com/

Orient Watch Co., Ltd.’ s M-FORCE watch features a newly developed mechanical movement. It is an authentic sports watch first released in 1997. As the name “M-FORCE” (short for “mechanical force”) suggests, it is a mechanical watch expressing “forcefulness” and has been widely acclaimed since its initial release. After an interval of about nine years, Orient is now releasing a new M-FORCE, as an authentic diver’s watch that inherits the concept of its predecessors. The M-FORCE is an authentic diver’s watch that features a smart and rugged design, water resistance to 200 meters for use in scuba diving, shock absorption enabled by a special structure, and ISO compliance. While it is an authentic diver’s watch, the M-FORCE also features superb design and high functionality, making it ideal for daily use, too.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Owners Manual: http://www.orient-watch.com/support/pdf/K9a.pdf

First Impressions & Thoughts:

I did not know what to expect when this watch arrived.  I must admit that I was unfamiliar with this model.  I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I opened the box.  The color combination is the first thing I noticed.  The blue is gorgeous and really popped, I'd call it that deep royal blue.   The dial is perfectly accented by the red second hand and trim on the dial and crown.  The greenish-white indices and hands are again a perfect compliment.  Needless to say I was very excited to get this one sized and take it out for a spin on the wrist.

Pictures AND Info
:

Watch Details:
water resistant 200m | power reserve indicator | Sapphire Crystal | Hackable & Hand Winding with Automatic Winding System

Certifications:
Certificated by ISO 6425 diver’ s watches, ISO 764 anti-magnetic watches and ISO 1413 shock-resistant watches

Packaging:

Outer Box:
The watch was well packaged in a sturdy shipping box.  It came with an outer and inner box of very nice quality.   The watch was wrapped in plastic to prevent scratches.  The watch came sitting on a nice, soft, over-sized pillow.

Inner Box:

Opened Inner Box:

Watch and Box contents:
The box included the watch, hang tag, and manual.  The manual is also available on-line.

Bezel:
This model uses a 120 click unidirectional rotating bezel.   The bezel rotation is smooth, firm and with very little play.  It makes a distinct, if not somewhat noisy clicking, as it rotates.  It is easy to grab as the bezel has a notches built into it as part of it's design.  The markers lines up very nicely at the 12 o'clock position (a pet peeve with many of us).  The black bezel insert is enclosed within a stainless steel outer ring.  I think the raised portions of the bezel will offer a some crystal protection against minor surface contacts as well as offer easy grip for turning.  It is also equipped with a lume pip.

Crown Side: The screw down crown is located at the 4 o’clock position and is stamped with the Orient logo. Located around the crown is one of the nice red accents, in the form of a red O-ring, that matches up with the second hand and some of the dial writing.  I really like the look this offers.  I also like the 4 o'clock position as this seems to provide an added level of comfort for me on these 46mm plus cases.  I noticed this with my Zodiac Oceanaire and that was always a comfortable watch to wear.

The crown screws down and unscrews nicely.  But the stem does feel a bit flimsy when the crown is pulled out to the second stop position.  I am concerned by the amount of play in the stem.  This is a major concern for me.  I will have to see how the crown/stem performs over time.  I keep my automatics on winders and only have to set them a few times a month, if that, depending on how accurately they run.  However, I have heard about crown/stem issue on several watch models and the feel of this one is enough to cause some concern for me.

Case: The M-Force diver case provides a combination of brushed and polished finishing.  Polished finishes are a little harder to maintain.   I like the brushed because a quick touch-up with a Scotch-Brite pad can easily be done by the owner.  Cape Cod cloths work well on the polished surfaces but do require extra care as you need to avoid contact with the gaskets of the watch.

The lug width is 23mm. This is a bit of an odd size but the watch comes equipped with a bracelet so you will not be looking for a 23mm aftermarket one.

Crystal, Dial, Hands, Date Window:
The watch comes in three color variations: black (SEL03001B), blue (SEL03001D) and orange (SEL03002M).  This watch incorporates a sapphire crystal.  The dial is extremely legible and the large applied markers and hands provide easy readability.  I like the contrasting red second hand.  It stands out against the blue dial and co-ordinates with the other red accents on the dial.  The date window is located at the 9 o'clock position.  I found it a bit small and would prefer a larger date opening for easier viewing.  I like that the power reserve indicator does not significantly detract from the functionality of the dial.  That was very well done on this dial in my opinion.

There does not appear to be any AR coating on the crystal.

Case Back: This is a simple and rather nondescript case back.  Functionality is all that can be said about it.  I'm not a big case back connoisseur as they are not seen by anyone but me.  I'd rather the attention goes to the design and the visible portions of the watch.

Bracelet/Clasp:  The watch comes with a divers style bracelet with folding clasp with dual push button release. The bracelet does not come with solid end links.   It does come with a pair of fat spring bars.  The clasp provides for 3 micro adjustments.   I prefer the ratcheting clasp used on some other divers like my Boschett Cave Dweller II.  That is my favorite diver clasp as it provides for quick, simple micro adjustments.  Missing is a divers extension, which may be important for some that actually plan to use this for diving.

The bracelet is 3.5mm thick and feels well made and solid despite the fact that the end links are not solid.  My Steinhart Ocean 44 bracelet is 3.8mm thick for comparison.  The end links fit tight to the case.  There is very little play and almost no rattle to the bracelet.  It is not a thick, heavy, rugged bracelet like we just saw on the new NFW Autopilots.  But it does make the piece lighter and adds to the overall comfort of wearing this watch.  The overall quality of the bracelet is good and I would not be concerned about the bracelet if purchasing this watch.

Caution: This bracelet uses the pin and collar system and can be difficult to size.

Wrist shot: Here is this watch sitting on my 8.25 inch wrist.  One extra link, so I think you would be good up to about 8.5".  The watch sits tight to the wrist and is very comfortable for a watch this size.  It is a large watch and you should consider its size when purchasing.  I too often hear that the "watch was too big for my wrist" when I see near new watches appear on the sales forums.

Lume Shot:
Better then average lume as you can see.  The markers are evenly coated with luminous paint.  Even the second hand has a small lume spot on it.

Orient M-Force (left) vs. Steinhart Ocean 44 (right)

Comparison Photographs: Steinhart Ocean 44

Orient M-Force (left) vs. Steinhart Ocean 44 (right)

I measure the Orient as 46.3mm from 9-3 across the case and 51mm from 10-4 including the crown.  In comparison the Steinhart is 48.4mm from the 9 to the end of the crown and 44.5mm from the 10-4 across the case.  In these pictures I think the two seem about the dame size.  In person the Orient is significantly larger.  The dial opening is larger and I like that with these old eyes.

Orient M-Force (bottom) vs. Steinhart Ocean 44 (top)

The Orient is 13.3mm thick which is thin enough to wear with most shirts.

Movement Info:

Movement : ORIENT caliber 40N5A Made in Japan

Drive system : Self-winding movement with Hand winding mechanism
(Second hand halt mechanism )

Vibrations : 21,600/hour vibrations

Daily accuracy : +25 to -15 sec/day
My timing has this particular watch running at about +3 sec per day.

Running time : More than 40 hours

Number of jewels : 22 jewels

I would have to say that the sweep second hand is not as smooth as my ETA 2824 movements.  Not that it is bad, however, I can notice a very slight tick to the second hand that I do not see with my ETA movements.

Summary:

There are so many divers on the market that it is hard to choose.  This one offers some very nice features in a watch that brings the quality and reliability of the Orient name.  This watch can be found on the Orient web site selling for around $700 US.  However, it is frequently discounted by 25-50% so you should be able to find it for about $350-$400 US.  I think it is a bargain at that price point.  It offers a power reserve indicator, an in-house movement, superior luminosity, and comfort in a mid-sized diver's watch.

I think that this watch can best be described as a sporty diver that offers both functionality and wearability.   I enjoyed evaluating this watch and I can see myself reaching for it often as part of my weekend rotation.  Great to wear to the beach and then straight to dinner and a movie.  I don't think you could ask for more from a top quality diver with these features and in this price range.

Very good review Marc. I think a nice rubber strap would work very well with this one.

Great review! What I don't get though is why a major watch manufacturing company like Orient cannot deliver a complete diver. In this case the lack of divers extention on a bracelet that is impossible to replace at 23mm is a deal breaker for the serious diver. Otherwise it would be a "real" divers watch and a bargain at that, especially with the frequent 40 to 50% discounts offered by Orient USA.

Great review Marc... Really informative and excellent pictures. I've found myself looking at this watch more than once when the 50% codes come around... Might have to grab one at some point.

This is an appealing watch.  I agree with Spaceview that the color combination works well.  I simply can't get past the bezel.  It appears to be "stamped sheet metal".  I'm sure its not, but it has that same appearance that many of the knockoffs have when they try to replace solid metal components with stamped metal.

Great review Marc.  I am a fan of Orient.  The only think I don't like is the bezel design.  The issue with the stem is alarming too.  I have a watch from another company with the same issue and it's always in the back of mind that it is going to fall/break off. I guess time will tell.  Thanks again!
