When you have a good day folks, be happy and let other know they do happen sometimes.
Last week i went to a local pawn shop, and the had a lot of old and new watches in a display case. Most were dead and dusty. I notice a decent looking pocket watch, asked to see it.It was in a cheapo chrome case, but the face was porcelain , old looking, i opened the back up , and lordy be !! A pristine brassed movement from what had to be the late 1800s. And when wound , it worked! It is a lever set waltham , size 12. I asked what the owner wanted for it after looking at it. he said 30 bucks, and of course though Santa was real good to my daughter, and i didnt have any extra cash to spend , so i left it in the shop empty handed, and thought on it.
Today they reopened after the holiday. i went in with a plan. I would offer a bulk of my knife collection {about 90 dollars worth id estimate,i kept many of my nicest } For the largest number of decent watches he had, including the waltham pocket watch. The owner went for it ! I got 5 watches for the trade, including a few other swiss watches that were old. And we struck up a conversation that revealed my watch repair learning and repairs. I ended up trading him 2 of my personal digital watches {a casio and a Timex humvee, both work perfect but rarely worn} for his own personal use for more old watches he had in a drawer, including a Gruen Precision 21 jewel wristwatch for men in Great to Excellent condition ! And i replaced a watch battery for his daughters watch for a bag full of watch parts and watch tools from a junk box he had .
Will post the Gruen and the other watches in their respective watch group threads.
Being picky and inspecting stuff in a store sometimes does good for you. I had a good day, thank god for it !.

that's an awesome score :c

my lone pocket watch is a Waltham with a very similar dial and hands. case is sterling silver tho. it was a wedding gift from my wife (looong before i got into this crazy hobby). she grew up in Arlington, MA- which is more or less the next town over from Waltham.
