Watch Being Reviewed: Magrette Regattare 2011

Watch was provided for review by Dion McAsey , owner of Magrette Watches

Company Website: http://www.magrette.com/index.php

Magrette History : http://www.magrette.com/our-story.php

(Snippet from About Page)

At first I struggled with finding suppliers that would take me seriously with such small runs of components. I also had to search long and hard for a case manufacture who could produce a small run. The first few companies I tried just laughed at me, but in the end I found one that has worked for me well . Our Vintage Style roll case is made to a very high quality here in Auckland while all the watch components are sourced from overseas. Currently we have straps made by a specialist in Canada, graphic design work done by a kiwi in Taiwan & dials supplied from Germany!

First Impressions:

My first impressions upon opening the the box was, what amazing packaging this watch came in, a very upscale presentation. For the watch itself, it immediately reminded me  of the classic Panerai Radomir style, but with their own take and flair on it.

Packaging:

The Magrette came EMS Express and arrived in the States in 4 days from New Zealand. The box was bubble wrapped and sealed with a business card like tape...first time I have seen that. The watch comes packaged in a Magrette branded pine box, with a sliding lid. Once opened, reveals the New Zealand Canvas pouch, that was tied in a bow with a Magrette business card underneath. The pouch holds the watch, the extra rubber strap, and another space for a strap or possibly another watch if you wanted to. Overall, extremely nice presentation, that is different than most other watch boxes, and not only good looking , but very practical.

Dial :

The dial is a black  matte stadium dial that houses the internal bezel. I really love the clean look of the dial, with the numeral 12 and all other markers being lume sticks, with the 3,6 and 9 being double stick markers. The internal bezel has 5 minute markers, with a red arrow at the 60 minute mark, and red numerals at 15,30 and 45. The dial is clean except for a date window at the 4 o'clock position with Magrette written under the 12 and Regattare written in red above the 6 0'clock position. The hour and minute  hands are stick hands with pointed tips both filled with lume, and outlined in stainless steel. The second hand is all stainless steel with no lume.

Case, Bezel and Crystal:

Case dimensions:
44mm wide

46mm with crown

15mm thick including domed crystal

24mm lug width
weight about 140 grams on the leather strap

The case as I alluded to before, is reminiscent of Panerai Radomir styles, but with their own take on it. The case is a 44mm cushion type case with a round bezel. The sides of the case are all brushed, as is the  top of the bezel, while the top of the case and side of the bezel and lugs are high polished.  Looking at it from the sides, the way that they did the brushing and polishing, just gives it a very 3d sandwich case look. The little amount of high polish, gives it that classy sporty look to the watch. The right side of the case has the 2 crowns, the 2 o'clock being the crown for the internal bezel, and the 4 o'clock crown being the time/date setting. Both crowns are screw down , and both are very secure with little to no wobble. It appears to be a one piece solid case, with the bezel being attached separate.  The case lays very flat on the wrist, with the curved down lugs giving a very symmetrical appearance and feel.

The crystal is a 3.5mm domed sapphire crystal with inner AR coating. As you can see, it is slightly raised above the bezel, and though as some other domed bezels I have seen, there is really no distortion at different viewing angles and have had no problems telling the time looking at the dial, even at a glance.

Caseback:

The case back is nice solid divers type case back, but nothing spectacular. It has a machined engraved Magrette logo and brand in the middle of the case back with a brushed outer ring containing the normal important information, such as case material, crystal material water resistance and movement. Though nothing jaw dropping, it is a very thick case back that has a very smooth , very nicely machined feel to it, and I think it adds to the overall look and feel of the watch.

Leather Strap :

The leather strap that comes with the Regattare is one of the best stock leather straps I have seen come with a watch. It is a textured black strap of high quality calf leather, with a red leather backing that has the Magrette logo on one side, and genuine leather on the other. . It is extremely soft and supple, does not crease or crack and is just a very smooth leather strap.  It is about 4mm thick with a  very large leather keeper . The buckle is a thick thumbnail type of buckle that uses a screw to secure it to the strap, and not your standard friction type pin. It is also stamped with a Magrette logo. Again, I always like to point out the pros and cons of anything I review, and this leather strap is a big pro, it is just an amazing leather strap, and I would love to see more companies in this price range, use straps of this high quality. This is easily on par with a lot of the custom strap makers we forum members have purchased from.

Rubber Strap:

The rubber strap is a molded silicone rubber strap, with dual rubber keepers and a flatter square type buckle that has the Magrette Logo stamped on it. It is a nice thick rubber strap with a textured tire tread type back. I am not a fan of silicone straps in general, and while it is nice, and it uses the same screw system to attach the buckle to the strap, it doesn't match up to the quality of the leather strap. I would have liked to have seen a natural rubber strap , over silicone.

Wristshot on 7 1/2 wrist:

Movement:

The movement is the Miyota 8215 movement. On the particular model I reviewed, I noticed, that when wearing the watch regularly, it keeps very good time, but on the 2 occasions I picked it up out of the box after a day of sitting, and I reset the date and time, it did not run for more than 10 minutes. I usually always just set the time and give it a light shake and put the watch on my wrist, and on my way I go. It seems that I have to give it a vigorous shake to really get it going. Now, again, once I do this, and wear it , I have not seen any issues, but wanted to point out what I had noticed with the movement.  I personally would have liked to have seen the new Miyota 9015 at this price range.

Lume:

The lume of the Magrette Regattare is average. It is not horrible, but is not anything to write home about either. The hour and minute hand and all the markers are lumed with C3 Super Luminova , and glow a nice green/blue. The hour and minute hand glow much brighter than the hour markers, and while initially very bright starts to dim after about 15 minutes. With a good outdoor sunlight charge, it lasted about 3 hours or so, before I barely could see the lume to read the time.

Summary:

The Magrette Regattare sells for $545 USD.

All things combined:, the pine wood box, the New Zealand Canvas pouch, the leather and rubber straps and the polished/brushed case with the 8215 movement, and a double domed sapphire crystal overall I think is a good value. It does not look like every watch out there, and though not a dive watch, it is rated to 500m of water resistance. It is a limited edition of 2011 pieces and with the assembly and testing done by hand  in New Zealand assures you excellent quality control.  It is a very sporty/classy looking piece that can be dressed up or dressed down with the leather or rubber strap, and with a 24mm lug, would look nice on many different straps as well, if you choose to switch to something else. The shipping was fast, the presentation very good, and the watch is very comfortable, and does hearken to something that might cost a little more. Again, for this price point though, I would have like to have seen the 9015 movement used, and though I love the black/red color combo, I would also like to see in future editions, maybe some different dial color options as well.  Overall, a very good looking watch, that is very comfortable to wear and enjoy.

Great review Don! Your photography skills are much improved, and have made it difficult for me to stay in the NBZ... :)

I will be picking this one up in the near future thanks to you! Or whenever I can sneak it past the missus...

Randy, thank you  for the compliment on the photos.......I was never one for photo taking a couple of years ago, but then when I started on the forums and now the reviews, I have been playing around with cameras, cell phone cameras and taking many different shots and angles to see how they come out. Still some need for improvement on the dial shots, but I am getting there.

Good review Don.  You've opened my eyes to a new company and "style."  I am really digging this piece.  I agree with you, for the money I think an upgrade in the movement would have been better.  I like the styling of this piece and how they combined the brushed and polished look.  Thanks for another good review.

I dig the Margrette watches and if I could be satisfied with a dive watch on a strap 24/7, I would be very interested.

Hopefully in the future they will offer bracelet options or create a design with short lugs so aftermarket bracelets can be used.

Great review Don.

I, too, have noticed your photo skills are much improved.

I have watched this watch since I saw Lex do a review on OceanicTime and have really liked it.

Thanks for bringing it to WF and giving your thoughts on it.

I really like these Magrette watches.

Nice review Don! I normally do not say this about other companies but Magrette is my favorite cushion style watch brand. Its nice to see another company out there that keeps to a specific case design.

This was a nice review Don.
Your wrist shots did a great job of capturing the interplay of satin brushed and polished surfaces on this watch.

Your wrist shots got me wondering.
Does this watch visually look a little bigger then its 44mm when it is on the wrist?

Take Care,
pdanielf :)

Well, it does play a little larger than 44mm as I said in review, but the watch is off center in the wrist pics, so it looks like the lugs overhang my wrist, but it doesnt..........it doesnt even go edge to edge to on my 7 1/2inch wrist.

Nice review Chef the only thing keeping me from buying is the movement if it was 9015 or a 2824 I would own it even for more money....Dion makes some beautiful pieces of art...those engraved models are drop dead beautiful..

Excellent Review & a GREAT 'Read', Mr. Tattoo Chef, SIR! ...
... and, with it's cool 'tattoo' motif, should be 'right up your alley!' ...

BTW, Magrette's lineup 'interprets' these ancient tattoo's ...
... through some absolutely exquisite engraving that, IMHO, ...
... may account for the big bucks they sell for on magrette.com ...

Very good review Don. I really like the look of this one but the lume and movement may stop me from buying this particular one. I agree at this price point I would like a 9015 or a 2824 and maybe a bracelet. Those straps do look fantastic.
