Okay Freeks, I'm getting ready to plan my annual vacation and I need some ideas on where to go this year.  I usually go to Hawaii every year, but I'm looking for something a little different this time.  I know that we have members from all over the world on this forum.  I'm not looking to visit any third world or war torn countries for any of you smart asses. LOL!!

I would like to spend roughly 7 days and stay within a budget of $4K USD.  I'm not partial to tropical climates even though my wife is. I also don't want to wear a bear skin coat to stay warm either LOL!! I would prefer to fly, but I'm open to driving if it isn't more then 15 hours one way.

I've visted most of the US Western states however I haven't been to New Mexico or Arizona. I've also been to most of the Eastern coastal states with the exception of everything North of Virginia.  As for the Central states I've been to Illinois and Ohio.

I've always wanted to visit New York and New Jersey however I can't sell my wife on this idea LOL!! I will only be taking the wife on this trip.  The kids will be staying with the in-laws.

Let me hear some ideas.  I'm really stumped on where to go this year.  Ocean front is always a plus for the wife.  Thanks in advance.

Back to the mother land.  That's not a bad idea.  My family is from Switzerland.  I've never been there.  What is the weather like in October?  I would imagine it is quite cool that time of year.

Although I've never experienced it personally, I hear Greece is amazing.

The British Virgin Islands? They rock!

Portsmouth, NH is great that time of year. ocean front on the NH/ME coast at that time of yr is cheap and if you hit New England at the end of Sept or early Oct you get to see some pretty spectacular fall foliage. there is more great restaurants here than anywhere i've ever seen in such a small town. it's nothing to start at the coast and be up in the mts in an hour's drive. you'll get some killer seafood (how's <$4 a lb for lobster grab ya?).

stuff to see when in this area: Boston is very close (1.5 hrs drive) and has everything you could ask for- museums, sports, historical sites, etc... Portland, ME is less than an hour and has a very cool waterfront with great local shops in the Old Port. LLBean and Freeport, ME are another half hour north.

some photos of Portsmouth-

I have to admit I really like BC.  I was up there in 1986 for the World Expo.  One of my favorite places. That golf course is singing to me.
