If you work in the private sector, chances are that you get substantially less time off than your counterparts in Europe. Check out this interesting little article:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/05/23/vacation.in.america/index.html?hpt=C2

I've never had more than 3 weeks paid vacation in any job that I've held, and usually don't take all of my vacation time allotted each year. Luckily I can carry over the vacation as long as it doesn't exceed 6 weeks total. A couple of years ago I had to take off some additional time to take care of a family member, so this helped a lot, although technically it wasn't a vacation and was actually very stressful.

How does your company rate in terms of vacation (sorry, no government workers allowed)? See poll above.

I haven't had a full week off since 1978.

I get 4 weeks.

But can only take them a day here and a day there.

Usually take Mondays off for a three day weekend.

Just the nature of the business I guess.

That sounds just about like me Eric.  If I took a whole week off at a time I wouldn't be able to find my desk when I returned to the office. Sheesh!! I need to move to Europe LOL!!

My company offers 2 weeks vacation AFTER 1 year of service for new employees.

I've been with the company 15 years and I now have 5 weeks vacation.

My issue, much like Rob, is returning from vacation and finding that pile of work that takes forever to clear off the desk....that sucks the fun out of the vacation for sure.

I haven't had a real vacation in over 11 years. I usually take a day or two here and there to make a long weekend. The last vacation I had was my honeymoon. Ironically, we honeymooned in Europe. It was the last weekend in August and I guess a lot of countries in Europe take the whole month of August off for vacation. It was a nightmare because not much was open when we arrived and most of the restaurants were closed except the fast food joints. Over here vacations are considered something you earn (if you're lucky). Over there it's a right.

At my work it depends on long you you are working for the company. after so many years you get allotted a certain amount of time. I believe it's 1 to 4 yrs 128hrs, 5 to 9 years 168hrs, and 10 or more years 208 hrs. You can roll over your time each year as as you haven't reached your max accrual. Once the maximum accrual amount has been reached, no additional hours will be earned until previously accrued PTO is used. Which sux. I try to get in a vacation a couple of weeks a year

I have the worlds best boss & she would let me take all the time I wanted for a vacation but I am too busy to take one. I don't have time to have a life let alone a vacation.

Ahhhhhh - 4-6 weeks paid vacation mandatory, by law - and you HAVE to take them. Gotta tell the wife we're moving to Germany. Time to order Rosetta Stone.

My wife's company doesn't offer vacation time per se.  They get Personal Time Off...PTO days...that they use if they are sick, or need time off for vacation.  My wife get 28 PTO days to use how ever needed.  She usually uses them at Christmas time as that is a really slow time of year for her division....as no one wants to come take training classes around Christmas.  Last year by this time I had been in and out of the hospital so much, she used almost half of her PTO days just staying with me in the hospital!!!!
