I've been looking myself. I'm no expert but I think if you want to run XP apps you need Pro at least. Heres a link to compare. http://store.microsoft.com/Windows7/Compare

Get 64 bit.

Do you mean the Windows XP operating system?
It is being phased out completely so you might have to go with Windows 7. I love XP and still have it in my laptop, but more and more it is not going to work with programs coming out in the near future.

Aloha Donut [size][color]

Sorry this is a little after the fact, I'm suer you installed already, but someone else might be interested in this info. I have been away again -0 this time I spent month and a half in the UK, on special assignment setting configuring and installing 250 desktops for a new active directory forest (Node) containing 4 Work Units (subnodes) and someone in the architecture group had had the brilliant idea of using a laser link - laser does not do well in fog, heavy mist, or through clouds- therein is the additional 10-14 days while redesigned the infrastructure and swapped microwave for laser not as sexy but operational !. Then I spent a good 6 weeks attending to a broken hand having dropped a large multi-disk enclosure on my hand at the airport British Airlines freight desk. Typing is still a little funky ~!

Window 64 bit

In General Windows 7 64 bit Operating System has 2 major advantages over 32 bit.
* 1) it is Faster
* 2) It can use more than 3.8 mg of Memory
I say "in general because after deep inspection of all of the Win 7 Subsystems it turns out that 64 bit sits on top of the 32 bit OS Core - This is the function of all of the Wow*.* DLL's and DB file; WoW = "Windows-On-Windows" , So I am looking forward to the speed increase when they get around to rewriting the core into 64 bit, of course there goes 32 bit code compatibility.

The noticed speed differential between 32 and 64 bit Win 7 was in the 30-50% range. I set up absolutely identical systems Hardware and OS, and ran the system using a video editing suite , same suite trying both the 32 and 64 bit software on the 64 bit OS machine. I measured the the time it took to perform the calculations for a given effect to insert into the timeline and render the entire piece. Here are the timings ( I used a Chase-Druer Conquest Copper dial Leather Strap, chronograph, I know, I know...that fact is probably more interesting to a large number of freeks than the tech gobbly-gook that is in the rest of this post- sorry But, this is the computer section) The intersection of the program the and the OS type

Program / OS Type 32 bit 64 Bit

32 Bit Program 6:52:25 3:33:13

64 Bit Program 02:18:04

The dif for the 32 to 64 OS alone = 03:32:22 49.1% increase in speed
and the dif on a 64 bit OS between the 32 an 64 bit Program = 01:05:09 or 36%

Rob

Some things to consider before you decide is, do all your peripherals, printers, scanners, whiteboards, etc. have 64bit drivers. If you have older printers, scanners etc. that you like, you may not be able to find drivers for them. There is a chance, a good chance, that  they may run on Windows Vista 64bit drivers, which supports  more hardware, but you won't know until it's too late if you just go buy. I suggest you go to the support pages for each of your peripherals and see if they offer 64 bit drivers. If they do, 64 bit is the way to go. It still may be the way to go if you have been considering replacing that old printer and scanner, with a brand new all in one.

The only real significant advantage of 64bit is memory addressing, or RAM. You can have much more RAM on a 64bit system than a 32 bit. Windows 7 64 bit will supports up to 128GB of RAM, whereas the 32 bit version can only address 3.6GB. But IMO 3.6 is adequate for most home users.

There is a slight speed advantage with 64bit but not enough to be a consideration in purchase.

I should tell you I have 64 bit OS in all my computers  except one which has older hardware and will not run it.  My server runs on a 64bit AMD processor, and our laptops are all Windows 7 64 bit.

*****Maui Freek posted at the same time I did, looks like there is a speed diff in programs. I was not aware it was that significant. The peripheral issue is still the gate keeper IMO unless you want to go out and purchase all new. Best to check first, and if they offer 64 bit support, go for it!
