Hi Freeks; Mrs CJ needs a new laptop. We are thinking net book since she does not need a CD/DVD drive and she only uses it for email and surfing (not not watch sites LOL, baby stuff, purses, shoes and clothes).
I have seen name brand units for as little as $249 and as much as $499. I would like to stay in the $249 - $300 range. Anyone have any experience, thoughts or opinions?

All I can say is avoid HP at all costs. I've had nothing but problems with HP's.
Dell is all that we use at work and I've never heard anything bad about them. We run about 450 units so I guess that's a good brand to go with. All our patrol cars have Dell Laptops and our office PC's are Dell. I've never owned one personally, but I know others have and love them.

I own three Dell laptops. One older model (D520) and two newer models (Vostro). They all run great and I've never had any hardware issues with them. I like them because you can custom build them when you order. Two of mine run Vista and one is running XP. I have not made the move to Windows 7 yet.

I have a server I build to replace my HP DV9339us and gave it to my wife to use.

I used a Dell c400 on the road and at hope for many years. Still have three of them around the house. BUT on a daily, hourly basis I use the Acer Aspire One 8.9" screen from Wallyworld for $298.00. I just love the heck out of it. I purchased a DVD writer for less than $70.00 and an extended 9 cell battery. I retired from the world of computers. I have had many computers. My first luggable was an Osborne CPM based machine. I had Kaypros, Sharp, Panasonic then upgraded to Dell. I have a Dell P4 Precision that is a laptop work horse. All my recent computers/laptops/netbooks run XP Pro. The HP uses Vista, a piece of junk. If and more likely when I dump the $2000 HP 17" screen laptop, I will get an Acer 10.xx" screen. Just love this computer. I highly recommend it to for surfing to heavy duty Bookkeeping.

I have always used Dell business laptops and have literally no complaints. Their business class lines are very well made, great service, etc. But they are going to fall a little above the budget mentioned in the OP.

:)There are three netbooks in the household ( along with two Towers Two laptops and an NAS unit plus a home built dual quad processor H2O cooled I7 based system. ) I think I collect computers as well as watches. The net books are HP, Dell, And Asus. what you are most concerned eith in a netbook is the processor and keyboard size. The better processor is the Intel Atom and the closer to a full sized keyboard you can get is best. Just rated as the number one by PC Mag and Maximum mag is the Asus EEE 1000HE which has both plus expansion slots.5 As long as you stick with a Brand name with a good warrantee you should be alright
