Default NY Standard Pocket Watch 1898, Wrist Watch Conversion

I've created an adapter, non-destructively converting my 1898 NY Standard 12s pocket watch into a wrist watch. I did not modify the original case, but instead designed a cradle that holds the pocket watch (from above) to my wrist. I think it is a disservice to history when someone welds lugs to the case of a vintage pocket watch to convert it to a wrist watch. This method is easily interchangeable between wrist watch and back to pocket watch, without the use of tools or damaging the watch. I designed the adapter using CAD, then uploaded the file to a 3D printing service bureau for production. They printed it in wax, created a plaster mold, then cast it in brass, hand polished and finally 22k gold plated. Next is to get a new strap that fits the lug dimensions. Overall watch diameter is 50mm.

Below you can see the three major parts, the strap, the pocket watch, and the adapter.

AWESOME CONVERSION..same ingenuity that led the DOUGH BOYS of WWI to convert their PWs so they could hold their rifle and glance at the time...

until then wristlets were for women only

Fascinating evolution in watches... I pulled out a pocket watch once to check the time, a friend commented "...you have to pull a watch out of your pocket to check the time?" I asked him to tell me the time... he reached into his pocket, pulled out his 'smart phone', looked at it, and then said "...oh".

That was my initial attraction to it, found it at a small town watch repair shop... unfortunately it is only a 7 jewel movement. If it dies, I will replace the movement with a higher grade.

Yes indeed, thanks much! I made two prototypes from plastic to check fit and make adjustments before I commited to the expensive version you see here. It actually fits two pocket watches that I have, which is lucky for me! I want to get a nice leather Bund style strap made for it next. Maybe in black.

If there's no such animal out there now, you might want to get your gizmo patented. I'd be in the market for one. I love vintage watches, but my 8.5-inch wrist makes their smaller size look too small. A vintage pocket watch converted is the answer for me.

Is that as comfortable as your other watches?

Kudos on your project
Iv'e been wondering who would be the first to convert a size 12 pocket watch
to a wrist iteration?
Now I know. You deserve 100 attaboys.

Thanks much! I'm good to go until the fashion trend returns to smaller watches!

I haven't seen anything like it, there is one that grabs from below, but it was made for 18s which is way too big for my wrist. I wanted something that made it look like an actual wrist watch, so this was my solution. I will say however, it is not a very practical solution. Vintage pocket watches are all over the place in external dimensions. The movement sizes are fairly consistent within a size (12s, 18s, etc.), but I have 6 size 12 pocket watches, and only two will fit this cradle adapter. As far as comfort, I do wear it a little snug to insure it stays put under the cradle, and it is significantly heavier than a modern wrist watch, but not so much that it is a nuisance. A major downside is that a vintage pocket watch lacks a couple of critical items: water/dust resistance, and no shock resistance. As such you have to be a little extra cautious when wearing one on your wrist. FYI, I have fairly tiny wrists at 6.75 inch. It would look more at home on a larger wrist.
