No decent automatic Chrono is even going to be in the same price bracket as that Casio.

$250 to $300 Automatic Chronograph? You are talking about a back alley Shanghai Chinese model then.

- Automatic

Pick any two...

This watch had been really good to me and unless my idea of "decent" is off, it hits all 3 criteria. Hell, it's even Swiss made!

EDIT: missed the above post with more criteria. No black out and no lume on the swatch. My bad

Look for Invictas. Used auctions will get you in the $300 range and there are plenty of supply.

I bought 2 7750 chronographs off eBay for $350 NIB condition. 40mm you'll be looking for probably an older model.

A 2 minute search for "black out" produced this. Looks like the power ran out mid date change.

But really you can just put in 7750 valjoux in the search box and see what comes up.

I know there's a lot of love/hate with Invicta BUT they have a model that meets your general criteria and it has one of the most reliable movements you can get in that price range! The Seiko nh35a.

I couldn't find the 40mm version, but I heard there is one. Here's an amazon link for the one I COULD find. This one is 47mm, sadly that's kind of what they do make good looking watches and then make them HUGE. That fact bums me out because there's quite a few that I like that I could never wear. But I personally own 4 of their divers and 2 of their Speedway chronos, and they are all accurate, reliable and I've never had any issues with them

Originally, I bought one for my 30th bday gift to myself, I chose it based on the look, it's not just a submariner knock-off (though I do now have the one that is, because it looks great and I could actually afford it!), it has a sapphire coated crystal (flame-fusion), it has the Seiko NH35A movement and the last reason is that I have tiny wrists because I'm disabled and Invictas have 2 more removable links than other comparable brands. So I had finally found a great looking, affordable, decent quality watch that fit my wrist! Anyway, sorry this got so long lol

Here's the link, happy hunting!

As long as you get the more recent models of any Pro Diver it will have a Seiko movement, which is a great movement! Unless you're talking about the quartz model, then I'm not sure, although I have 2 Speedways that are both quartz and they seem just fine to me!

You do realize that a 40mm automatic Chrono is going to be as thick as a hockey puck, don't you?

If you are just going for a look, I would choose a Quartz model, the seconds hand on almost any Chronograph is going to be on a sub dial, so you are not going to get that sweeping hand magic from it visually anyways.

Quartz Chronographs are much more comfortable to wear, usually only 12mm high, I would look for one of those, and Seiko has a plethora of those available.

I have owned/own two higher end Chronograph watches, one an Automatic, Tag Link Chrono, the other a Quartz Breitlng Colt Chrono.

The Tag had a Valjoux 7750 movement and the case was very high , perhaps 16mm. It was heavy and unbalanced, it was a nice looking watch, but ran at about +9 seconds a day. Of course the seconds hand was on a sub dial and you really couldn’t appreciate the sweeping hand there at all.

The Breitling has the “Super Quartz” (HAQ) movement and the height of the case is only a little over 12mm so it is infinitely more comfortable to wear because it is thinner and better balanced. The “Super Quartz” runs at about +9 seconds a YEAR, not a day like the Tag. It also has the seconds hand on a sub dial, so in reality you couldn’t tell the difference unless you really have a close inspection of the dial.

I flipped the Tag after less then a year, the Breitling I don’t see flipping ever, and I’m a mechanical guy, just not on Chronographs.

If you're willing to ditch the chrono. You'll find these for $90-$150 all day long.

Good solid watches at a reasonable price. If you're really into the black op's thing. Luminox is probably the way to go if you want lume. Invicta has plenty of black "combat" models. But few have any lume. Plenty of black ion plated models with decent lume though. Good luck shopping.

i just came across this one. it's quartz but its swiss quartz....
biggest con is that like my Invicta chronos it isn't a true tach as chaz was pointing out. i've always wanted an auto chrono myself (thanks chaz for all the great points about it, i'm definitely off that dream lol). Anyway, price/look this one is great, function/quality - not sure :/
