It's basically because we like them, and when you like something, you like something I guess. It's like shoes for women like you said, or any other hobby, or interest out there. When you enjoy something you want to experience more of it. From watches, to even things like food, and tv shows. For instance when you like Pizza, you know you are going to have it again, and not just have it that one time. Same thing goes for a tv show you like. In the end, it's not about already having a watch, or watches, it's about basically just liking the hobby, and everything about it.

Great topic GW !

Arrow No real answer ...

I can't fully explain why I have more than one watch other than a watch is not a need for me. I could get by without one I suppose, using my phone, clock in car etc, although that would likely result in being late on occasion.
It's a want, an interest, a hobby. Like it's been said before, it's about the small mechanical device on the wrist that works with just the movement of my arm. I too look at them not just to tell time, but to admire. I stop & look at my collection daily at least once, resulting in a change of what I'm wearing (sometimes more than once per day). It is a passion. Life without passion is not a full life IMO. So I continue along, reading, posting & dreaming about the next purchase. Thankfully, my wife has the same affliction. We never sell or trade. And so it goes. Three more in the pipeline for me, two for my wife Sue.

I like my shoes, jackets, hats, vehicles, and my watches. Watches speak to me as do my other "hobbies". They are an extension of my personality and mood. I appreciate the mix of craftsmanship and style. And there always seems to be another one I "need". Another one is on the way.

My theory has always been that you're either the type of person who collects or you're not. And for me, whether watches or shoes (or guitars or automobilia or audio equipment such as turntables ) I certainly need to own more than one to better appreciate them!

I'm a collector avant la lettre. Watches, flight jackets, Dinky Toys, miniature busses and coaches (vintage models), books, vintage range finder cameras and knives

Great thread!!!! ... man, I'm an amalgamation of several other WIS here... I like shoes too, I have more pairs of shoes than watches, actually. I like hats, have more than watches. When we vacation around the US we've made a habit of going to MLB games, and I almost always get a hat for that home team. Unless their rivals of the Detroit Tigers, then I have to get something more subtle. Like socks! Yet another collection. I really like fun socks. Happy Socks makes some great styles! I also like jackets... a nice jacket is just a wonderful thing. Probably the reason I have more of many of these than watches is because some are just practical, thus I get less guff from the S.O. about them, and many are simply less expensive than my watch tastes!
