I have a Seiko Pepsi Chrono 6139-6005 that I received as a graduation gift. I wore it daily for years before putting it back in the box.I have the original boxes, paperwork, and purchase receipt. I'd liketo begin wearing this watch again after having it professionally serviced and restored.

A) Who are reputable shops for undertaking such a restoration project?

B) Does it hurt the value to change the dial color? What is the most desirable color?

C)Rather thanspend the money to restore this watch should Isell this watch "as is" and put the monies toward a different more collectible watch? If so, what should I consider?

A couple come to mind:

Dr. Seiko/Randall Benson -

International Watch Works/Jack Alexyon - http://internationalwatchworks.com/

They both specialize in restoration

i second both of those suggestions.

restoration is a subjective thing. some think leaving it as original as possible increases the value. a crystal polish or replacement isn't necessarily frowned upon by the purists as much as aftermarket dials/hands/bezel inserts. a re-lume of orig. hands/dial is also a personal thing but not frowned upon.

personally, i would leave whatever dial color it is.

the 6139 was the first auto chrono in outer space and was worn by Col. William Pogue aboard Skylab in 1974. the watch has become known as the "Pogue" because of this. it is a highly desirable watch among Seiko collectors. personally, i would love to own a nice copy someday. you can read about how the watch was confirmed to be the first auto chrono in space here- http://sinn142.fateback.com/pogue.html

Thanks to both of you for your posts. I spent time on Randall Benson's web site. I, also, spoke with Jack Alexyon on two occasions. (Jack is the nicest guy! He was very patient in answering all my questions.)

As much as I have enjoyed my chronograph, I have decided to sell it "as is" rather than undertake a restoration project. The Seiko 6139-6005's physical conditionis typical of a watch thathas beenworndaily for a number of years. The watchwas running and keeping accurate time until last week when it stopped running. All of the crown functions work. The chronograph functions do not work most likely due to old gaskets. The watch has never been serviced.

Offeredwith the watch will be all of the original boxes and documents includingtheblue and gold exterior box, the bluedisplay box with $125.00 price tag, sales receipt dated 5/13/1974, Seiko Worldwide Guarantee (72-10), Seiko Guarantee Certificate (E71-4), Seiko General Instructions (73-4), Seiko Automatic Chronograph Instruction Card (EST 70-7), and an extra bracelet link.

A couple more questions. Where should I advertise my watch? What should be my asking price? What is the lowest price that I should accept? I am patient and do not have to do a quick sales.

here and watchuseek.com would be good places to list it FS but there is a min. post count you'll need to be able to post something FS. i don't think there's one at WUS. all orig. condition with papers/boxes should fetch a decent price. you may even think about eBay and spread the word around the various fora (in the appropriate areas of course)
